Reporting to the Assistant Director of Facilities and Outreach specific duties of the position are as follows:
Personnel Management and Supervision:
Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate approximately 50 student employees to include; head lifeguards, lifeguards, student pool operators, swimming instructors, program assistants, a graduate assistant, and safety services instructors.
Evaluate student employees in accordance with departmentally prescribed procedures on a semester basis.
Lead and conduct monthly lifeguard in-service training to assist in maintaining lifeguarding skills and providing skill development, accident prevention, and emergency response preparation.
Provide a diverse offering of educational and motivational workshops and specific job training for student staff to enhance cooperation among departmental program areas.
Provide certification opportunities for student employees in first aid, CPR, AED, lifeguarding, and other related safety services.
Coordinate bloodborne pathogen classes with the Department of Infection Control and offer to student and staff employees.
Administration and Management:
Provide administrative oversight for aquatic programs and aquatic camps.
Establish and enforce policies and procedures relating to aquatic programs, aquatic camps, and aquatic environments.
Assists in the development of marketing and promotional themes and strategies to promote aquatic programs, safety courses, camp offerings, services, and facilities within the Department.
Work collaboratively with the Assistant Director of Communications & Promotions on the production of promotional materials for a variety of programs.
Develop, monitor, and project all budget requests/requisitions associated with the operations and programming of aquatics, camps, and safety services.
Schedule student staff to supervise aquatic facilities during hours of operation.
Provide appropriate risk management procedures in the performance of duties associated with aquatics and general recreational activities. Enforce OSHA guidelines and adhere to national standards and accepted practices in the operation of aquatic environments.
Ensure the swimming pools comply with health code standards and are prepared for inspections by the Pitt County Health Department. Purchase swimming pool operating permits on an annual basis.
Assist with implementation of departmental and university community aquatic-related programs and camps.
Develop and expand the group and private swim lesson program for adult and youth.
Develop and expand the internal aquatic summer camp offerings and university community camp programs.
Assist in recruitment and solicitation of internal and external reservations, camps, and other aquatic-related reservation requests at CRW leased or owned facilities.
Risk Management, Technology, and Assessment:
Coordinate educational efforts for students and users about lifelong skills as they relate to safety, learning to swim, and swimming for fitness. Maintain current records of the CRW staff’s safety services certifications.
Maintain current records of CRW’s aquatic and first aid equipment inventory control and audit procedures as it relates to mandated safety replacements.
Assess, recommend, and purchase aquatic and first aid supplies and equipment as needed.
Utilize and create inventory control processes through technology and other digital resource management programs to manage staff certifications, departmental reports, and audit records using sustainable-based efforts.
Assist with the review and maintenance of CRW incident and accident reports.
Assists with data collection, development of data, reports, and assessment related to aquatic programs, safety courses, safety equipment, facilities, and risk management.
Assist with the risk management of aquatic and safety related programs and services, ensuring they are congruent with industry standards of practice.
Maintain accurate inventory and proper loss control practices for the security of equipment.
Utilize the Department’s software to meet the needs of Campus Recreation and Wellness for program registration, membership sign up and renewal, the tracking of member visits and transactions, equipment check-out, scheduling, work order tracking, and report/form submissions (Innosoft Fusion, WhenToWork, Connect2Concepts, Smartsheet, or similar).
Serve as the CRW departmental liaison with American Red Cross, Department of Infection Control, ECU’s Environmental Health and Safety department, ECU Dive Office, and other areas that are relevant to the management of safe water practices in collegiate recreation.
Order and maintain CRW AED’s and AED supplies.
Assist with providing follow up to participants who have been injured at a CRW program/facility and have filled out an accident report. Keep accurate documentation of the follow up.
Coordinate departmental audits with staff supervisors.
Serve on the CRW Risk Management Committee.
Facility administration, development, maintenance, and management:
Establish risk management procedures for areas of responsibilities in the form of an Emergency Action Plan.
Assist in facility reservations, supervision, and logistics at aquatic facilities.
Responsible for daily upkeep of the aquatic facilities.
Maintain, inspect, and communicate minor repairs for the aquatic facilities and coordinate with supervisor on major repairs.
Develop and implement adequate checklists and reports and records regarding facility, equipment, and swimming pool maintenance.
Provide short and long-range planning and fiscal management related to aquatic and safety program administration and aquatic facility operations.
Develop, monitor, and project budget requests / requisitions associated with the administration of the CRW aquatic facilities and safety services.
Assist with preparation of the departmental budget with primary responsibility for an aquatic and safety services budget.
Research, select, and purchase equipment and supplies for the areas of responsibility.
Recommend capital improvement projects by providing research and assessment relevant to area needs and product availability.
Coordinate contracted facility services, such as swimming pool chemicals, and facility maintenance.
Serve in other leadership roles and responsibilities as business dictates.
Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology, Recreation, Health and Fitness or related field from an Accredited Institution
One year of professional experience. Two years of graduate assistant experience counts as one year of professional experience.
Experience hiring, training and supervising student personnel.
Knowledge related to aquatic facility management.
American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification
Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator
Master's Degree in Exercise Science, Health and Fitness, Kinesiology, Recreation, or related field (Preferred)
American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (preferred)
American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Trainer (preferred)
American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (preferred)
