This is a full-time position under the direct supervision of the Managing Director of Recreation Programs. The Director of Sport Programs is responsible for the development, direction and evaluation of a comprehensive Intramural Sports, Sport Clubs, and open recreation programming that serves an average of 5000 participants annually. The Director will work to cultivate a safe, equitable and inclusive community and environment through education and the identification and removal of barriers for program staff and participants. This position is expected to work occasional evening and weekend hours during scheduled Sport Club and Intramural programs.

Responsible for the development, direction and evaluation of a comprehensive Sport Clubs program, Intramural Sports, and open recreation program that meet the needs of a variety of skill levels, abilities, and interests of the University community.
Provides direct supervision to the Assistant Director of Sport Programs, Coordinator of Intramural Sports and Coordinator of Sport Clubs.
Oversees administration of fall, spring, and summer Intramural Sports and open recreation programming, including officials development, team leagues, tournaments, adapted sports, and special events.
Oversees administration of innovative and inclusive open recreation activities that are intentionally designed for a variety of skill levels and align with the mission of Recreation & Physical Education.
Manages operating and personnel budgets for all Sport Programs, Sport Programs endowment accounts, reimbursements, cash advances, and budget meetings for Sport Clubs.
Assists with coordinating travel arrangements (lodging, airfare, vehicle rentals) for Sport Club participants.
Ensures all Sport Club uniforms and promotions are in conjunction with departmental and university branding standards.
Collaborates with Duke Athletics for scheduling and maintenance of shared sports facilities.
Responsible for purchasing and tracking inventory of sports equipment and uniforms.
Counsels participants and members and processes disciplinary actions when necessary.
Provides leadership to Sport Club Council and Sport Club Council Executive Board.
Manages part-time Sport Club coaches and develops coaching/instructor agreements.
Acts as liaison between a variety of university constituents including Duke Athletics, Student Government, and other off-campus groups for initiatives and activities.
Responsible for establishing, tracking, and assessing fund raising strategies in collaboration with the department’s Development & Sponsorships Officer.
Coordinates and adheres to departmental risk management efforts for all programs and facilities in areas of responsibility.
Serves on departmental, university, and/or national committees.
Supports and helps progress the university and department’s commitment to anti-racism and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Bachelor’s degree from accredited institution in Recreation, Sport Management, Sports Administration, Physical Education, or related field. Three or more years of professional experience managing comprehensive Sport Clubs and/or Intramural Sports programs. Experience developing, evaluating, and providing direct supervision to full-time staff. Must have current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification or be able to obtain within two months of employment (provided by department).
Master’s degree from accredited institution in Recreation, Sport Management, Sports Administration, Physical Education, or related field. Five or more years of professional experience managing a combined model of Intramural Sports and Sport Clubs in a collegiate recreation setting. Experience developing, evaluating, and providing direct supervision to multiple full-time staff members.
Knowledge, Skills, Ability
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products. Ability to communicate with diverse populations. Demonstrated understanding and a strong commitment to customer service. Knowledge of risk management planning. Ability to prepare financial reports, statistical reports, inventory control, budget management, and student development for the Intramural Sports and Sport Club programs. Shares the responsibility of the mission, strategic planning and goals for Recreation and Physical Education. Knowledge of the principles and practices governing the management of Intramural Sports and Sport Clubs; knowledge of the principles and practices used in planning club activities; knowledge of the principles, practices and theory of recreation administration. Ability to plan, organize, schedule and promote recreation activities and programs; ability to supervise and direct the work of others; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to prepare statistical and budgetary reports; ability to successfully work with and serve a diverse University community; good judgment; reliability; initiative and resourcefulness.
