The Venture Out Coordinator for Adventure Recreation and Custom Programs works with and assists the Assistant Director in the administrative management of all operational and programming aspects of Virginia Tech's comprehensive outdoor program; Venture Out.
This Coordinator will aid in the supervision of program operations/logistics while leading and evaluating selected programs (i.e. trips, clinics, workshops, trainings, and challenge course and team building facilitations); help recruit, supervise, train, evaluate, and schedule Venture Out student staff members; facilitate office operations in rental, retail, bouldering wall staffing and reservation coordination; oversee routine promotion and tailored social media/marketing of all adventure trips, clinics, challenge course and other VO programs; work to recruit and develop custom programs for specialized communities. This coordinator will supervise several student workers in office and field settings. Other duties as assigned with program and departmental needs.
The Coordinator reports directly to the Assistant Director for Venture Out and works in conjunction with members of the Recreational Sports staff to enhance the quality of life for the university community by educating and encouraging participation in activities that promote healthy lifestyle; creating inclusive spaces and social interactions for all; determination; and leadership skills.
Operations Support: 40%
The coordination and operations for the Venture Out Challenge Course and Team Building programs, and Adventure Recreational programming; including the development of custom programs for specialized communities. Program Development: 35%
Assist with the development and management of university equipment strategy for inventory, procurement, management, rental, retail, and maintenance of program gear through current program standards and departmental software input and tracking systems. Custom VO programing outreach and coordination. Climbing wall operations, reservation coordination, and staff scheduling. Marketing and promotion on social media (trip and program promotions, photos and video management). Direct communication of VO programs and coordination of operations to university and community partners.
Risk Management and Training: 20%
Assist with implementation of a comprehensive risk management plan while leading, teaching, and participating in all areas of Venture Out programs (trips, trainings, clinics, workshops, team building and challenge course programs); insuring all aspects, inspections and certifications for activity operations are meeting current best practices and align with national or university standards. I would like to officially take lead on scheduling Adventure Trip skills trainings and training planning meetings. Provide a minimum of 4 workshops per semester.
Department and Student Affairs Initiatives: 5%
Participate on committees and initiatives taking place in the larger Recreational Sports and/or Student Affairs areas.
Bachelor's degree in Education, Outdoor Recreation, Recreation Management, Sports Management or related fields; and/or equivalent experience.
Outdoor recreation and leadership portfolio (i.e. Documented Adventure Recreation, challenge course and team building facilitation, climbing/bouldering wall operation, trainings, trip leading and outing experience)
Knowledge, skill, and ability to serve as lead instructor for at least two of the following Outdoor Program activities: skiing, hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, mountain biking, caving, flatwater canoe, sea kayak, whitewater rafting, whitewater kayaking, or other clinics and workshops (such as swift water rescue, leave no trace workshops, team building/group initiatives)
Experience with computer systems,(Microsoft Office)
Wilderness First Responder certification with First Aid and CPR credentials within 90 days of hire
Experience working with Federal, State and Local Governments to obtain recreational permits
Experience leading trips in variation of environments
Ability to function independently and to complete projects with limited supervision; manage ambiguity and collaborative decision making structures; have strong problem-solving skills; show high levels of flexibility and adaptability; excellent mentoring skills; and ability to work effectively with a diverse student population Experience with social media applications and information management.
Experience with presenting to and training groups
Experience supervising student employees at a collegiate level Experience staffing and managing a comprehensive challenge course
Nationally recognized certification(s) such as: Association for Challenge Course Technology, American Mountain Guides Association, American Canoe Association, Leave Not Trace, American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education, International Mountain Bike Association, experience working within college outdoor program(s), Outward Bound, the National Outdoor Leadership School or similar entity Ability to demonstrate initiative and leadership, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work with a wide and challenging range of students, parents, community members, and coworkers
About Virginia Tech Recreational Sports- Venture Out
The Department of Recreational Sports operates within the Division of Student Affairs. The Department maintains two recreation/wellness facilities: McComas Hall and War Memorial Hall. McComas Hall offers three basketball/volleyball courts, an eight-lane indoor swimming pool, a weight training and cardiovascular workout area, two fitness studios, spin studio, fitness assessment center, TRX and core area, locker and shower facilities, equipment check out, an elevated jogging track, and a lounge area. The facility is also home to the Student Health and Counseling Centers. War Memorial Hall offers an indoor swimming pool and diving well, 6 basketball courts, 13 racquetball courts, 2 wallyball courts, a gymnastics room, locker and shower facilities, a handball court, a weight room, volleyball courts, a squash court, saunas, a dance/fitness room, and a multi-purpose room. The Department provides programs and services in open recreation, fitness, aquatics, instructional programs, intramural sports, sport clubs, outdoor recreation and special events.
