Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation for Aquatics, this position will serve on a team responsible for the daily operations of aquatic programming and related staffing for programs including, but not limited to, informal recreation swim, swimming lessons, first aid and CPR classes, and other student-centric aquatic programming. Campus Recreation is a department within the division of Student Affairs that provides recreation and wellbeing programs to the campus community through the operation and administration of the following: IM Building, McCoy Natatorium, Stone Valley Outdoor Recreation Area, Tennis Center, White Building, Hepper Fitness Center, Outdoor Adventures, Aquatics, Club Sports, Fitness and Wellness Programs, and Intramural Sports. Campus Recreation is comprised of 53 full-time staff and more than 900 student staff members.
The McCoy Natatorium is an 80,000 square foot facility containing three bodies of water; a 6-lane, 25-yard competition pool, a 6-lane, 25-meter recreational pool, and a diving well. McCoy hosts informal recreation swimming, water fitness, Boga Fit fitness and yoga classes; a full youth and adult swim lesson program, as well as special events such as battleship and dive-in movies. During the summer months an outdoor pool serves informal recreation swim for the campus community.
Assist in the development, management and daily oversight of a comprehensive aquatics program.
Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, mentor and evaluate student staff including lifeguards and first aid and CPR class instructors.
Requires independent work on assignments, while reviewing progress and updating the Assistant Director as appropriate.
This position requires a bachelor’s degree along with three years of aquatics experience. Current lifeguard certification is required. Knowledge of collegiate aquatics programs including lifeguard training and development, masters training and other aquatic programming as demonstrated through past experience in a collegiate setting is a must. Knowledge of basic safety and risk management practices and industry standards as they relate to aquatics programming and program management is required. The ability to foster a positive climate among a diverse group of users is essential.
This position requires independent work on assignments, while reviewing progress and updating the Assistant Director as appropriate. Excellent interpersonal, organization and communication (oral and written) skills are essential. Must be able to manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines. Attention to detail and good judgment are vital requirements. The successful candidate will have the willingness to lead and work in a team-based environment as well as an eagerness to support and engage with all departmental and Student Affairs initiatives and efforts. Required to take initiative and have flexibility to adapt to shifting workload demands. The work schedule will include some evening and weekend hours. The ability to foster a positive climate among a diverse group of staff, student employees and participants is essential.
