Jobs in this career family support students' emotional and physical well-being and intellectual, cultural and social development outside the context of the formal instruction program or traditional academic unit. Functions include student counseling, career guidance, residence life, multicultural affairs, support of student activities and organizations, recreation services and intramural athletics administration.
Professionals at the intermediate level are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field.
At the intermediate level, duties may be more limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from other professionals.
Position Emphasis:
The Fitness Coordinator will support the leadership of personal training and group fitness programming at the Salazar Student Wellness Center. Areas of oversight include group fitness, specialty and private fitness classes, personal training, and small group training. The seven dimensions of wellness are key components to student development at CU Denver and play an integral part of this position. Responsible for hands-on operations including personnel supervision, customer service, fitness equipment operations and maintenance, delivery of programs and services, staff/student development and training, and safety and risk management. This position is unclassified and salaried and reports to the Assistant Director of Programs. The qualified candidate will be required to work Monday-Friday and occasional nights and weekends.
Examples of Work Performed:
- Under the guidance and direction of the Assistant Directors and the Executive Director of Wellness & Recreation Services, this role will provide supervision for day-to-day operation of group fitness and personal training program areas.
- Contributes to overall health and wellness programming.
- Staff supervision including hiring, training, scheduling, feedback, evaluation, and payroll processes for group fitness instructors and personal trainers.
- Provide on-going education and support for supervised staff members through regular trainings and in-services.
- Coordinate and teach group fitness instructor and personal trainer course (ACE curriculum).
- Assist with the annual budget submission for fitness program areas.
- Under the guidance of the Assistant Director and department marketing staff, implement publicity strategies to maximize program participation.
- Ensure the highest possible level of customer service in order to provide exceptional experiences.
- Implement program assessment tools to assess program needs, participant satisfaction, and overall program feedback.
- Execute equipment and supply purchasing within budgetary parameters.
- Inventory and maintain all equipment and supplies to ensure quality, safety and security.
- Provide ongoing program updates including participation, assessment data, and financial status.
- Serve on campus committees as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in exercise science, kinesiology, recreation, health promotion, higher education, sports management, or a directly related field from an accredited institution. Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis, but not for the specific experience.
- One (1) year of professional-level experience with fitness programming and development.
- NCCA Accredited group fitness certification.
Required: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Conditions of Employment:
- Current certification in CPR, AED and first aid or the ability to obtain within six months of hire.
- Ability to work variable schedule which may include early mornings or evenings, as well as weekends and nights, and the ability to attend on and off campus events.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in exercise science, kinesiology, health promotion, higher education, sports management, or a related field from an accredited institution.
- Demonstrated supervision experience.
- Experience with collaborative programming
- NCCA accredited personal trainer and/or health coach certification.
