Department Summary

The mission of the University of Michigan Recreational Sports is promoting a healthy lifestyle through engagement, leadership and activity. The Department operates multiple programs, four indoor facilities and two outdoor field complexes. The department consists of 36 full-time staff and over 650 student employees. Established in 1913, the department is considered to be one of the first collegiate recreation programs and is the first program to have a facility dedicated to student recreation (Intramural Sports Building, 1928). Recreational Sports reports to Student Life through the Associate Vice President of Student Life.

Job Summary

The Program Manager will be responsible for managing the Membership Services program for Recreational Sports; which includes revenue generation, member recruitment and retention and member experience initiatives.  Revenue expectations for membership services exceed $1,500,000 annually.  Create budgets, policies, procedures, and strategies for on-going improvement.  Assist with day-to-day facility operations as needed.  Serve on assigned committees to represent the Department.  Assist with creating, planning, and implementing comprehensive, departmental student staff training and development based on the departments’ mission, vision, and values along with a focus on student engagement and development.  Assist with the strategic leadership and vision for the department customer service philosophy and training module.

Required Qualifications*

• Bachelor's degree in recreation, higher education, hospitality, sports management, business or a related field        
• Minimum 1 years’ experience with  relevant professional level management of program services and/or customer service functions
• Experience in membership sales, customer communications and overall customer service functions                                                           
• Experience with collaborative team environments and the ability to form positive relationships                    
• Current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and AED or the ability to obtain within six months of hire
• Graduate Assistant experience will be considered towards meeting the required qualifications

Desired Qualifications*

• Master's degree in recreation, higher education, hospitality, sports management or a related field.
• Experience in development and oversight of program budgets
• Leadership within a campus recreation or other membership related program
• Demonstrated success in establishing and meeting revenue goals
• Experience in development and oversight of employee recruitment, on boarding, training and development programs        
• Sustained involvement in NIRSA or other professional associations

Financial/Budgetary Responsibility

Assist with preparing, overseeing, forecasting, and managing the operating budgets of areas of oversight that total approximately $1,300,000-$1,500,000 annually.

Working conditions

Evening and weekend work responsibilities, as needed; be available by phone to provide leadership during times facilities and programs are operating.

Physical requirements

Ability to move equipment/supplies weighing up to 50 lbs.

Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of the selected candidate.
