The Assistant Director reports to the Associate Director of Campus Recreation Programs & Risk Management. The Assistant Director is responsible for the overall planning, goal setting, assessment and coordination of the Competitive Sports Program. The Assistant Director directly supervises two coordinators and a graduate assistant and manages and coordinates scheduling for two outdoor field complexes, assigned special events, extramurals, special projects and handles various administrative tasks.

SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES: 

•  Possess a comprehensive knowledge of a Competitive Sports program
•  Assist the Director and Associate Directors in the planning, organization, scheduling and operation of a multi-faceted, accessible, and inclusive recreation program
•  Develop an overall plan inclusive of goals and objectives for the implementation of the Competitive Sports Program
•  Develop, implement, and review methods of assessment including personnel and programing and provide recommendations to the Associate Director
•  Conduct routine facility and equipment inspections to identify potential risks associated with all aspects of competitive sports facilities/programming with regard for     participant safety in accordance with national and local standards and best practices
•  Develop, manage and reconcile general and sport club budgets on monthly and annual basis and follow university purchasing procedures; collaborate with the   Coordinator of Business Operations on assigned funds
•  Supervise and mentor the Competitive Sports Coordinators, Graduate Assistant, intern/practicum students which includes communicating expectations, work plans and conducting performance appraisals
• Collaborate with the Associate Director, Recreation Grounds and Turf Manager, operations staff, physical plant and outside contractors in planning and coordinating regular general maintenance and special maintenance projects at all outdoor recreation facilities with
• Oversite of all disciplinary procedures with participants, club members, team or club sanctions, and employees
• Oversee student staff recruitment, hiring, training, development and assessment of work performance to ensure all Competitive Sports programming operates with appropriately trained staff and oversee and collaborate with the Coordinator of Member Services and Operations on payroll
• Collaborate with the Publication and Communications Specialist to identify and develop marketing strategies and promotional efforts to engage the campus community • Manage and oversee Sport Club Council meetings/trainings, SGA allocation process and bi-annual informational meetings
• Oversee all documentation for the Competitive Sports Program (accident reports,incident reports, waivers, participation records, program evaluations, participant evaluations, personnel appraisals and related)
• Evaluate, update and revise Competitive Sports handbooks (Intramural Sports, Sport Clubs, personnel)
• Perform other duties as assigned by Associate Director(s) and Director of Campus Recreation that align with the mission, vision and goals of UNCW

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

• Post-baccalaureate degree, or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative/equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis
•  Supervisory or related transferable skills
• Ability to delegate tasks as appropriate
• Demonstrated ability to handle conflict to resolution

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

• Master’s degree in Recreation, Sports Management/Administration, Leadership, Higher Education, Physical Education, Outdoor Education, experiential education or related field. (all degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institution)
• Five years collegiate recreation programming experience or 5-6 years recreation programming for a municipal recreation program and related experiences; Preferred experience for ideal candidate would have 3-5 years of direct intramural sports or sport clubs experience; Club Officer and/or Officials training at the collegiate level Required

Certifications or Licensures

• CPR / AED /Standard First Aid Instructor or Instructor Trainer Certification (may be acquired after hire) • Ally training certificates (i.e. Safezone, Greenzone, QPR, etc.) (may be acquired after hire)
