The Division of Student Affairs is the 3rd largest of 8 divisions at UNC Charlotte with 500 employees and $100M budget from all fund sources. The Director of the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is responsible for the leadership and development of a holistic and comprehensive health center including strategic and operational leadership, supervision to the members of the management team, and maintaining policies and procedures to ensure effective programs and services. The Director manages 21 full-time staff members with a $2.5 million operating budget. The Director reports directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Health and Wellbeing (AVC) in the Division of Student Affairs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
SENIOR LEADERSHIP: As a member of the AVC’s senior leadership team, help set the direction and leadership of the Health and Wellbeing Unit (HWB). Serves on University-wide committees as designated; prepares and submits reports as requested. Participates in the strategic planning process for HWB; directs and oversees this process for all units under their supervision.
CLINIC MANAGEMENT: Provides overall leadership and direction for the management and administration of the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services. Actively assess departmental needs and priorities, responding with quality programs, services and procedures. Articulate the value proposition for engagement with health-related matters on campus and the benefits derived.
SUPERVISION: Hire, train and evaluate four direct reports: Associate Director of Clinical Services, Associate Director of Training, Associate Director of Outreach and Engagement, and Associate Director of Access and Equity. Promotes overall leadership and sense of team to the staff within the department.
CUSTOMER SERVICE: Creates and maintains a culture of care in which student needs are effectively met. Proactively provides students with a variety of health care services and educational opportunities that enhance their holistic wellbeing. Seeks solutions to problems, conflicts, and concerns as they may arise from time to time. Instills these values in the student health staff and strives to make constant improvement in customer satisfaction with their clinical care.
FINANCE & BUDGETING: Works with the central management team to provide direction and accountability for all departmental budgets and the allocation and utilization of those monies.
PLANNING: Fosters and facilitates long-range planning as it relates to the department’s overall programs and operations. Provides continuous assessment, adaptation, and planning for the implementation of appropriate clinical services.
COLLABORATION: Develop relationships with key internal HWB stakeholders including the Student Health Center, University Recreation, and the Center for Wellness Promotion as other campus stakeholders as it relates to advancing the mission of the institution.
CULTURAL COMPETENCE: Facilitate culturally and linguistically appropriate leadership which demonstrates equity and inclusion within the unit.
QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum qualifications are a Master’s degree in Psychology or Counseling. Licensed in NC or eligible to be licensed within the next 6 months, if out of state. Terminal degree in counseling related field preferred. At least five years of increasing administrative responsibility in university or college counseling, associate or director experience preferred. 5 years’ experience as a clinician with 3 of those years post licensure. 3 years’ experience providing supervision to clinicians. Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing, knowledge of current trends and issues in college health services, supervision of professional staff and budget management experience.
Necessary Certifications/Licenses
Eligibility for licensure by the North Carolina State Board of Practicing Psychologist or North Carolina Board of Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors based upon successful completion of required training and licensure examination at the time of hire, and attainment and maintenance of licensure within 6 months of hire.
Preferred Certifications/Licenses
- Licensed Psychologist, Licensed Clinical Mental Health Provider
- Demonstrated experience leading, promoting and/or implementing aspects of diversity, equity, and inclusion into the work environment.
- Demonstrated understanding of the challenges facing students from underrepresented and/or marginalized backgrounds.
In addition to the minimum qualifications, the most competitive candidates will possess clinical training experience, experience in a college or university counseling center, director-level or higher management experience.
