GENERAL PURPOSE: Under the direction of the Associate Director of Programs, the Fitness and Wellness Coordinator is responsible for the development and implementation of comprehensive recreation programs, including Group Fitness classes, credit and non-credit Instructional classes, and Wellness programs. The Coordinator will oversee all aspects of Fitness, Instructional and Wellness programs, including daily operations, fiscal management, risk management, policies and procedures, facility management, scheduling and event planning, staff management, training and development, marketing and promotions, strategic planning, and program assessment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary Functions
- Responsible for the effective planning, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of all Fitness and Wellness programs including but not limited to: group fitness classes, personal training, instructional credit activity classes and wellness programs
- Develops and implements operating policies, procedures, standards, manuals and training for the Fitness and Wellness programs
- Ensures Group Fitness program provides a variety of class formats that is up to date with fitness industry, responsive to member feedback and inclusive for a diverse campus community
- Coordinates independent contractors for personal training and non-credit classes
- Ensures variety of academic classes are offered for sports, dance, fitness and martial arts
- Provides leadership for collaborative campus wellness initiative and develops wellness opportunities for participants
- Ensures all programs and services are governed by rules, guidelines, policies and procedures approved by the A.S. Recreation and Wellness Commission
- Maintains current fitness and recreation professional knowledge, proficiencies and contacts
- Researches and recommends purchases and replacement cycles for cardio and strength equipment
- Keeps current with university programming and activities through networking within various university programming entities and professional affiliations as appropriate
- Develops new programs and activities that serve students’ needs, fosters student learning, encourages and promotes diversity, and builds campus community, interest and pride
- Ensures adherence to Aztec Recreation, Associated Students and SDSU policies
- Develops programming alternatives and additional sources of revenue production through collaboration with other departments and external programs
- Develops marketing strategies, promotional materials and social media content in collaboration with Aztec Recreation Marketing Coordinator and student staff to promote and publicize fitness and wellness programs
- Creates, implements and analyzes assessment for all Fitness and Wellness programs
Instructional Responsibilities
- Schedules, coordinates and oversees group fitness classes and academic credit classes for sports, dance, fitness and martial arts activities
- Develops new classes and programs to meet the needs of a diverse campus community
- Develops and implements non-credit clinics and classes
- Hires, trains, evaluates and supervises all class instructors
- Develops class curriculum, skill development and learning outcomes for credit classes
- Acts as liaison to academic partners for all academic credit activity classes offered through Aztec Recreation
- Ensures all university requirements are met for academic credit classes
- Oversees academic student internships including developing curriculum, assigning projects and verifying required hours
Administration
- Develops and maintains short and long term strategic plans for Fitness, Wellness and Instructional classes
- Coordinates facility and program calendar for all Fitness, Wellness and Instructional programs
- Ensures all corporate and departmental deadlines are met and procedures are followed
- Ensures all contracts, insurance and program related documents meet A.S. requirements
Budget
- Develops and manages annual programming budget of approximately $265,000
- Monitors budget regularly, ensures year-end results meet approved budget and adheres to budget deadlines and guidelines
- Reviews budget activity reports regularly and submits corrections to accounting department; reviews personnel payroll to ensure appropriate work hours; reviews Federal Work Study timesheets
- Ensures all program revenue is collected
- Implements steps to adjust expenditures to compensate for revenue changes
- Maintains and implements long term equipment reserves budget
- Processes A.S. Procurement Card transactions and invoice payments in accordance with accounting requirements and deadlines
- Maintains program inventory, regularly evaluates equipment safety, repairs equipment and purchases needed equipment
Customer Service and Collaboration
- Ensures A.S. customer service guidelines are met by all staff in department
- Ensures department guidelines are established and met by all staff in department
- Establishes and maintains working relationships with various University departments, faculty, and staff (e.g. Exercise & Nutritional Sciences, American Language Institute, Residential Education, Student Affairs, Student Health Services, Health Promotion, Counseling and Psychological Services, Residential Education Office, etc.) and community partners
Safety
- Ensures all operations are conducted with safety of staff and customers as first priority, and in accordance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and other safety policies
- Adheres to Associated Students’ Code of Safe Practices
- Reports accidents to supervisor and reviews changes required to avoid reoccurrence
- Reports maintenance problems and/or broken and unsafe equipment to the appropriate party immediately
- Ensures all operations are conducted with safety of staff and customers as first priority and in accordance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and other safety policies
- Maintains knowledge of current risk management standards and common safety practices for recreation profession
- Adheres to Associated Students’ Code of Safe Practices
- Develops, maintains and implements risk management plan and emergency action training for all Fitness, Instructional and Wellness program areas
- Completes regular inspections of facilities and equipment to ensure all areas meet or exceed industry best practices and are in compliance with safety codes
- Ensures and documents that all staff are provided safety training and possess required current certifications for respective program roles
- Reports accidents to supervisor and reviews changes required to avoid reoccurrence
- Ensures proper documentation is completed for each accident (employee and/or non-employee) and forwards to the Human Resources department
- Reports maintenance problems and/or broken and unsafe equipment immediately and ensures repair or replacement before use continues
Staff Management
- Hires, trains, evaluates and supervises all class instructors, program support staff, and interns
- Ensures all hiring/termination is conducted in accordance with A.S. policy and timelines
- Maintains appropriate staffing levels to facilitate operation of the areas under supervision
- Develops a cohesive staff team and focuses on staff development
- Ensures each employee and volunteer is given written information about their job responsibilities, procedures and policies and understands the missions of the Associated Students and Aztec Recreation as well as the uniqueness as a student-directed corporation
- Directs work courteously and gives clear, specific and realistic goals, including methods of accomplishment, materials, support and accountability as appropriate
- Assesses and monitors each employee’s and volunteer’s knowledge, understanding, ability, readiness and willingness to perform each assignment; responds accordingly
- Holds effective staff meetings and regularly provides information regarding policy changes, special events and all other pertinent topics, keeping employees and volunteers informed of daily happenings and messages that pertain to their work
- Delivers regular feedback and provides employees with annual performance evaluations to review strengths and areas of improvement
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum & Preferred Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in recreation, exercise science, physical education, kinesiology or related field from an accredited college or university required
- Master’s degree preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum three years of full-time experience administering fitness related recreation programs required. Experience in a college campus environment preferred.
- Demonstrated experience of the following:
- Hiring, training, evaluating and supervising staff, including instructors
- Managing fitness, instructional and wellness programs
- Training instructors including but not limited to technical skills, safety and risk management, and emergency response
- Working knowledge of fitness equipment maintenance
- Developing and managing budgets
- Working directly with a diverse population of college students and volunteers
- Delivering and training others on exceptional customer service
- Developing and administering university level activity classes for credit preferred
Licenses & Certifications:
- Nationally recognized group fitness certification from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), or an equivalent certification
- CPR, First Aid, and AED certification required (certifications may be obtained within first month of employment)

SCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONS
This is a regular, full-time position. Flexibility and willingness to work long and irregular hours and days, including evenings, weekends and holidays as needed by program schedule.

Work conditions may vary depending upon the location of programs; programs may occur indoors and outdoors, therefore requiring exposure to a variety of elements. While working indoors, the lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Work performed within an office environment will include standard office equipment. While working outdoors, the work environment may involve exposure to various elements including but not limited to: sun, heat/cold, dust, pollens, precipitation, and other environmental risks.

Must be able to teach group fitness and other activity classes, as well as train instructors in multiple formats.
Depending on program requirements, physical demands may require standing and walking for extended lengths of time and may require lifting, pushing, pulling, moving and carrying items up to 40 pounds.

- Networks with other university programs, professional organizations and community entities to stay current with fitness and recreation industries as well as new programming ideas and trends for college students
EMPLOYMENT CATEGORY: Full-Time, Hourly, Non-Exempt, Grade 6
