The Department of Recreational Sports at The University of Louisiana at Lafayette has recently been approved to hire 3 graduate assistants for the upcoming 2022 – 2024 Academic years.
Due to our approval coming so late, this will be an expedited process. Application deadlines will be June 27th. Interviews will be determined and scheduled as applications come in. If selected for a specific assistantship, applications to the graduate school must be completed by June 30th.

Competitive Sports Graduate Assistant
Overview:
- Assist in the administration of all aspects of the Recreational Sports program, which include Intramural and Club Sports, with potential opportunities to work with other programs within the department.
Responsibilities:
- Plan, promote, supervise, evaluate and operate Intramural activities.
- Participation in state (LCIRSA) and Regional (NIRSA) tournaments.
- Assist with the hiring, training, and evaluation of Recreational Sport Supervisors, Game Managers, and Intramural Officials.
- 20 Game managers and Supervisors, 10-15 student officials.
- Attend and present at official’s meetings for all sports.
- Basketbal , Flag-Football, Outdoor and Indoor Soccer, Slow-Pitch Softball, Indoor Volleyball
- Assist with scheduling of Officials, Game Managers, and Supervisors.
- Maintain daily office hours to meet with student employees (25) and student patrons participating in programs.
- Assist with advising of individual Club Sports (18), including but not limited to advising club travel and hosted events, club activities and special events, and club finances.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology/Exercise Science, Sport Management, Recreation, or related field with a minimum 3.0 GPA
- Admission into a UL Lafayette graduate program
- Experience in Intramural Sports programming working as an official or supervisor
- Experience teaching rules and on-field mechanics to student officials
- Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals
- Strong organizational and management skills and professionalism
- Current Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications (or able to obtain them within the first month of employment)
- Enrollment in a full-time, in-person graduate program (minimum 9 hours per semester) to receive graduate assistantship, stipend, and tuition waivers
- Full acceptance into a University of Louisiana at Lafayette Graduate Program in the Department of Kinesiology.
Preferred Qualifications:
- High School officiating certification for at least one sport
- Current Red Cross CPR/AED instructor certification
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Knowledge of Innosoft Fusion Rec Management
- Experience with Subitup scheduling software
- Aspirations to become Campus Recreation professional
Supervision Received: Direct supervision received from the Assistant Director of Competitive Sports.
Supervision Exercised: Part-time Intramural student Supervisors, Officials, and Office Assistants.
Aquatics & Safety Graduate Assistant
Overview:
- Assist in the administration of all aspects of the Recreational Sports program, which include aquatics staff management, Red Cross administration, swimming lesson administration, event management, and facility management with potential opportunities to work with other programs within the department.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of student staff including 10-15 Head guards, 20 - 25 Lifeguards, 10 Swim Instructors, and ARC Safety Instructors as needed
- Assist with the planning, scheduling, and management of all aquatics and safety programming, including, but not limited to communication with patrons and instructors in a timely manner, supervision of programming, and evaluation of staff
- Work closely with Coordinator, Aquatics and Safety.
- Ensure quality of programs through leadership, red shirt drills, evaluations, trainings, and participant surveys
- Assist in scheduling for staff with the subitup software
- Assist in the scheduling of aquatic facility reservations using the Fusion Software.
- Lead implementation of safety skill drills for Campus Recreation staff
- Assist with planning and execution of monthly in-service training
- Ability to substitute for lifeguards and instructors if needed
- Review and revise all aquatics related content and promotions for the departmental website and other media channels
- Monitor aquatics and safety trends and recommend modifications to current programs, equipment, risk management policies, and operational procedures
- Assist other staff members with special events and programs as requested by the department
Qualifications:
- Bachelor Degree
- One year of experience in a aquatics supervision and programming
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification (AED, CPR, First Aid)
- Current Swim Instructor certifications from a nationally recognized certifying agency
- Be able to receive certification for LGI, LGIT or CPO within the position
- Full acceptance into a University of Louisiana at Lafayette Graduate Program in the Department of Kinesiology.

- American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Trainer
- American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Trainer
- Experiencing teaching American Red Cross Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor Classes

Supervision Exercised: Part-time aquatics staff to include lifeguards, head lifeguards, Red Cross instructors, and swim instructors.
Facility Operations Graduate Assistant
Overview:
- Assist in the administration of all aspects of the Recreational Sports program, which include Facility Operations, with potential opportunities to work with other programs within the department.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain weekly administrative office hours
- Hire, train, directly supervise and evaluate up to 50 student Supervisors and Assistants
- Plan and conduct monthly in-service trainings for staff
- Responsible for scheduling building and fitness center staff
- Assist with facility reservations by handling administrative duties and staffing for all campus wide special events
- Assist with facility reservations by handling administrative duties and staffing for all external group special events
- Inspect all facilities to ensure that they are free of hazards and safe for patron use
- Provide leadership to various student staff committees
- Assist in the creation and implementation of new policies and procedures and enforcing existing policies
- Work evenings (night duty) and serve as the departmental professional presence at least once a week and occasional weekends
- Helping with department, division, and university special events as needed
- Directly plan setup of various departmental facilities and spaces to account for a diverse offering of open rec offerings
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology/Exercise Science, Sport Management, Recreation, or related field with a minimum 3.0 GPA
- Admission into a UL Lafayette graduate program
- Experience in facility management with supervisorial responsibility
- Experience with the planning and implementation of staff trainings and bi-weekly meetings
- Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals
- Strong organizational and management skills and professionalism
- Current Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications (or able to obtain them within the first month of employment)
- Full acceptance into a University of Louisiana at Lafayette Graduate Program in the Department of Kinesiology.

- Demonstrated involvement within National Intramural Recreational Sport Association NIRSA

Assistantship Information
Date: 2-year position beginning in mid-August, 2022 with completion in mid-May, 2022. Appointment is contingent on maintaining good academic standing with the university as a full-time student (9 or more credit hours fall and spring).
Compensation: $1,007.00/month stipend plus full tuition waiver (in or out of state). Tuition waiver does not cover student fees.
