Position Function:
The primary function of the ASSISTANT DIRECTOR for COMPETITIVE SPORTS is to assist the Director in carrying out a comprehensive program of recreational activities and services, specifically intramural and club sports (competitive sports) programming as well as University Recreation’s Youth Dawgs children’s summer camp. This includes program development, fiscal management, and supervision of personnel administering those programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Plan, conduct, schedule, and promote quality competitive sports (intramural and club sports) programs for the university community. Assist in the maintenance of safe and clean outdoor facilities (Sawyer Tennis Courts, RecPlex Softball and Multipurpose Fields, and Sport Club Fields). Provide for the safety of participants and employees of the facilities. Be on-site or on-call during operating or competition hours.
2. Coordinate competitive sports programming for the Sanderson Center and the RecPlex with the facilities coordinator.
3. Plan and conduct annual Youth Dawgs Camp. Provide for the safety of participants. Be on-site or on-call during camp hours. Market, manage, and assess program.
4. Recruit, hire, train, supervise, schedule, and evaluate personnel for the Youth Dawgs youth summer camp. This includes development of training sessions and in-service training and testing; discipline and counsel as needed; terminate when necessary. Maintain accurate records for all staff members including training records and counseling reports.
5. Coordinate the purchase of staff uniforms and intramural sports and other special event t-shirts.
6. Recruit, hire, train, supervise, schedule, and evaluate all competitive sports staff. This includes development of pre-season training sessions, in-service training, and testing; discipline and counsel as needed; terminate when necessary. Maintain accurate records for all staff members including training records and counseling reports. Submit payrolls for all intramural sports personnel.
7. Advise the Sports Club Alliance. Assist clubs with the development of budgets. Ensure clubs operate within university guidelines. Assist clubs in making reservations for activity space. Serve as the liaison between clubs and the University.
8. Assist with maintenance records and reports for the day-to-day operation of the RecPlex to include maintenance schedules, repairs, and daily safety inspections. Inspect and maintain all equipment. Make repairs as necessary. Report facility repairs to Building Maintenance Technician.
9. Operate programs within assigned budget constraints; maintain accurate records of income and expenses. Maintain accurate and up-to-date program records. Prepare monthly and annual reports.
10. Assist the Director with short- and long-range planning for all areas of the department. Develop competitive sports program goals and objectives that support the department’s mission.
11. Maintain professional awareness of recreation and student development trends: Attend all departmental and divisional meetings, and conferences, seminars, and meetings as permitted for professional development. Work with other University Recreation staff, and the staff of other departments to provide special events.
12. Liaise with the department's risk manager and the university’s Emergency Manager in implementing risk management policies and procedures. Provide feedback regarding the safety of programs, equipment and facilities. This may be accomplished by conducting daily observations and/or by engaging in programs and using equipment and facilities. Immediately report safety concerns to the functional area director
13. Perform additional duties as requested by the Director or Associate Director.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Health or recreation-related field
Experience - 3 years in Collegiate recreation
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in Recreational Sports Administration, Physical Education, or related field
2. American Red Cross CPR/First Aid/AED Instructor certification
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED Instructor certification required
2. NFSHA-certified or NCAA-sanctioned official or ASA-sanctioned umpire for two or more years
3. Ability to plan, organize, and implement intramural programs and events
4. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
5. Proficiency in written and oral communication skills and utilization of computers
6. Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments
7. Employee development and performance management skills
8. Ability to foster a positive, cooperative work environment
9. Ability to plan, organize, and implement promotional programs and events
10. Ability to develop a budget and conduct programming within budget parameters
11. Ability to comply with all policies and regulations of Mississippi State University and enforce policies that apply to recreational sports programs and services
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
• Will be provided a private office
• Must be on-call whenever competitive sports programs are being conducted and responsive to emergency situations related to those activities
• Must be able to walk the length of the Sanderson Center several times a day
• Must be able to perform maintenance and custodial duties when necessary
• Must be able to attend weekend and/or evening training sessions
• Must be able to work as necessary to insure the facilities are open, which may include early mornings, late nights, and weekends
