Job Description:
Budget Title: Senior Staff Assistant (SL-3)
The Assistant Director Fitness/Wellness is responsible for providing professional expertise to the Fitness/Wellness program. This position will provide oversight and direction to the campus fitness center, the Group Fitness program, Personal Training services and specialty wellness programs. The Assistant Director will also instruct the Personal Training and Group Fitness Internship programs.
In coordination with the Senior Associate Director and the Program Coordinator of Fitness/Wellness, this position will administer, develop, plan, implement, organize, and evaluate a comprehensive fitness program. A strong focus will be on facility oversight, program development, staff hiring, training, coaching, and evaluation.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for supervising the Program Coordinator of Fitness/Wellness and providing guidance for all issues surrounding the Fitness/Wellness program including staffing hires/issues, facility/equipment upkeep and programming
- Responsible for supervising the Equipment Technician and providing guidance on issues surrounding equipment/facility maintenance
- Supervise the Graduate Assistant for Fitness/Wellness
- Responsible for the daily administration of the group fitness program including facility management and staff/class scheduling and oversight. Assistant Director will also oversee the procurement of new equipment as well as manage the continued coordination of present equipment repairs & maintenance. Assistant Director is specifically responsible for the direct supervision (interviewing, hiring, scheduling, training and evaluating) of the Personal Trainers, PT Interns, Group Fitness Instructors and Group Fitness Interns. Oversight will include monitoring the Bright Spaces site, SubItUp, required certifications and personnel files
- Coordinate all aspects of the Personal Training Program including marketing, supervision of the personal training staff, evaluation of the clientele health history questionnaires and review of Personal Trainer/client progress. Emphasis will be placed on providing consistent, safe and quality services adhering to industry standards. Assistant Director is also charged with facilitating on-going in-service trainings for staff to ensure skills are up to date with industry standards
- Instruct the Personal Training Internship class and the Group Fitness Internship class (OUT 395) once per academic year (one per semester). Emphasis will be placed on training students to become employees of Fitness/Wellness and preparing them to take the national certification exam for personal training or group fitness. Continuous revision of the course curriculum/materials may be required to maintain current industry standards
- Communicate and interact with the membership, clientele and staff to promote the effective delivery of services and risk management compliance. Customer service issues regarding altercations/disturbances, failure to comply with policy, or staff non-compliance with Behavioral Standards should be handled in an appropriate manner representative of the department's mission and objectives
- Instruct courses or workshop sessions in person or virtually for the Wellness program, including but not limited to American Red Cross Certification classes, Pink Gloves Boxing, Body Pump or TRX. Assistant Director is also expected to assist with staff certification courses. The expectation is that the Assistant Director will maintain instructor status and teach when coverage is needed and work schedule permits. AD is responsible for overseeing the teaching and staff training process for the Les Mills® exercise programs
- Work with supervisor to ensure the maintenance and safety of the fitness/wellness program areas and equipment. The environment of the programmatic areas is essential to providing quality service. Issues of safety should be brought to the immediate attention of supervisor or Director
- Provide health and fitness counseling to the campus community and serve as a resource for the referral to other health and wellness services on campus and in the community. Assistant Director should be prepared to teach, test, or train clients in person or virtually if needed, particularly those identified as high-risk or with special needs
- Represent the department on campus wide committees if assigned by the supervisor (i.e., Eating Awareness, Healthy Campus), or serve as the designated liaison with related organizations and activities within the community (i.e., American Cancer Society). AD will serve as leader of the Healthy Campus Physical Activity sub-committee and coordinator of the ACSM Exercise is Medicine on Campus® program
- Participate in all departmental trainings, retreats and meetings as scheduled
- Actively pursue professional growth through participation in educational seminars and professional organizations to enhance job performance and to provide
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, kinesiology, Physical Education, Health Promotion, sport management, or related field with a fitness emphasis
- Must have at least 2 years post-graduate experience supervising employees, interns, and /or volunteers in a recreation or fitness setting; or as professional planning implementing, and supervising a variety of fitness, wellness, and instructional programs
- Must have current national fitness certifications in Group Fitness and/or Personal Training from an accredited organization; ACE, ACSM or NSCA preferred
- Must have American Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid instructor certifications or the ability to attain them within six months
- Excellent organizational, administrative, communication, leadership, decision-making skills are essential as well as the ability to work individually and, in a team, setting
- Candidates must be open to occasional evening and weekend work obligations
Preferred:
- Master's degree from an accredited college/university in Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, kinesiology, sport management, or related field
- 2-3 years professional experience including staff supervision, classroom instruction and experience with the following:
- Serving clients as a certified personal trainer
- Teaching fitness classes as a certified group fitness instructor
- Facility management
- Budget development and management experience
- Specialty certification in Behavior Change, Health Coach, or similar
- Experience working with software packages including Innosoft Fusion, SubitUp, Trainer Metrics and/or True Coach
