Position Emphasis:
The Student Wellness Center is a department within the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Colorado Denver. The office is committed to the delivery of quality, student-centered wellness and recreation services. As stewards of student experience at CU Denver, the Student Wellness Center provides inclusive facilities, programs, and services, which focus on the holistic wellness and recreation needs of a diverse study body. The 85,000 sq. ft. Student Wellness Center opened in August of 2018 in downtown Denver.
The Assistant Director of Programs will provide leadership and expertise in the administration of comprehensive Wellness, Fitness, Instructional and Outdoor Pursuits programs. This position is responsible for oversight of the day-to-day operations, and fiscal responsibility of all aspects of wellness-fitness programming, to include group fitness and personal training, wellness suite services, instructional courses and outdoor pursuits operations in the Student Wellness Center and excursion trips. This role will be integral in the development and implementation of on-going programs and efforts in areas of oversight. This position will serve on the leadership team of the Student Wellness Center, and will offer supervision to unclassified staff and multiple student staff.
Supervision Received: The Assistant Director of Programs will report to the Executive Director of the Student Wellness Center
Supervision Exercised: This position will supervise Fitness Coordinator, and Outdoor Adventure Coordinator, Competitive Sports Coordinator (unclassified staff), independent contractors and student employees.
Examples of Work Performed:
- Plan, develop, implement and evaluate innovative wellness, fitness, competitive sports and outdoor pursuits programs based on industry trends and benchmarking.
- Establish, implement, and evaluate policies and procedures for the outdoor pursuits programs, to include rock wall, outdoor excursions, bike shop, group fitness, personal training, group training, health coaching, club sports, intramural sports and personal wellness suite activities (quiet room, meditation space use, food pantry).
- Supervise, develop and evaluate Fitness Coordinator, Outdoor Adventure Coordinator, and Competitive Sports Coordinator.
- Oversee the recruitment, hiring, supervision, training and evaluation of student staff including: personal trainers, group fitness instructors, outdoor pursuits employees, and group fitness instructors.
- Teach ACE Personal Trainer certification preparation course.
- Collaborate with CU Denver Human Resources to promote employee wellness.
- Oversee budgets, and equipment purchases.
- Assist with scheduling rock wall activities, outdoor excursions, fitness classes, group training, and personal training.
- Coordinate programmatic marketing and promotions, and encourage opportunities for involvement.
- Serve as primary risk manager for areas of oversight; secondary risk manager for all department programs, events and facilities otherwise.
- Serve as Manager on Duty to include decision making for the entire facility as needed.
- Develop, maintain, and enforce standards of safety and risk management plans for all outdoor excursion trips, fitness programs and fitness areas.
- Track and appropriately log all incidents, accidents or issues within areas of oversight.
- Compile comprehensive annual report – participations, impact, learning outcomes, etc.
- Attend meetings, events, trainings and serve on committees related to department, division or university mission and goals.

Salary and Benefits:
The hiring range for this position has been established at $63,287 to $80,501.
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- A bachelors’ degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Management, Physical Education or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
- At least five (5) years of management experience over outdoor adventure, competitive sports, and/or fitness programs.
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Conditions of Employment:
- Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs unassisted.
- Current CPR/AED certification, or willing and able to obtain prior to start date.
- Ability to work variable events schedule which may include early mornings or evenings, as well as weekends and nights, and the ability to attend on and off campus.
- Ability to work in an environment that may expose you to chemicals and/or blood/body fluids. This role will attend University trainings related to managing Biohazards (injury clean up) and Hazardous waste (Cleaning supplies).
- Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time, frequently walk, and bend/stoop, as well as execute repetitive motions.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree from an accredited university in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Management, Higher Education or related field from an accredited institution.
- Personal training and/or group fitness certification from an NCCA accredited organization.
- Experience in a higher education/campus recreation setting.
- Experience supervising students.
- Professional involvement in organizations like the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA).
- Experience working with campus recreation software (ex. Fusion, Connect2, etc.).

- Ability to provide 1-1 personal training and educate student staff in training philosophy.
- Professional involvement in organizations like the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA).
