NC State University is seeking an energetic, innovative, student-centered leader for the Aquatics Coordinator position. We seek an individual with proven leadership experience capable of working in a fast-paced, results-oriented team. The candidate will empower student and professional staff to create world-class recreation programs, services and facilities that promote and enhance student success inside and outside of the classroom. This position reports to the Assistant Director, Aquatics.
The candidate will provide leadership and manage the day-to-day operation of the Casey Aquatic Center (25-yard pool with dive well and a 50-meter competition pool) with emphasis on providing a safe, well-maintained and proficiently staffed environment. This position will provide significant instruction and development of students and manage instructional aquatic programs, risk management, schedules, event management, equipment maintenance and strategic financial planning and budgeting. The aquatic center is used by students, members, the NC State Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving programs, Health and Exercise Studies academic program, numerous student clubs and organizations, campus partners, youth swim teams and external users.
Specific responsibilities include:
Supervise approximately 50 aquatic student staff that include: lifeguards, supervisors, swim instructors and program assistants, with a focus on student training, development and learning. Staff is responsible for operational procedures, emergency actions plans, maintaining a safe environment/risk management and providing quality customer service to all students and members.
Provide instruction and development opportunities for staff through training, coaching and performance evaluations that incorporate student learning outcomes. Specific outcomes include critical thinking, creative thinking, problem-solving, quality customer service, conflict resolution, initiative, communication, innovation and other transferable skills related to the department’s work integrated learning program.
Coordinate student staff in-service training specific to emergency, accident and incident protocols. Make changes to the emergency action plan as needed. Track and maintain relevant certifications for staff.
Develop and execute an ongoing customer service training program to ensure goals, objectives and outcomes are met. Ensure a high level of integrity, teamwork, communication and initiative of all staff.
Responsible for managing time cards and bi-weekly payroll for staff.
Communicate expectations, policies and guidelines for the appropriate use of facilities. Recommend improvements to policies and guidelines as needed.
Resolve conflicts that occur in facilities. Specific examples include user non-compliance with facility and department policies and guidelines, illegal access of facilities, inappropriate behavior, etc.
Maintain aquatics equipment and informal recreation swim equipment.
Identify strategies for facility operations to be more efficient and effective through technology and other processes and systems.
Assist with the development and execution of assessment programs for facility operations. Participate in overall department assessment and goal planning.
Ensure all department facilities operate within required risk management procedures and oversee the implementation of standardized safety practices. Oversee compliance with NC State University and applicable national standards and regulations.
Serve as the Certified Pool Operator for the aquatic center.
Assist as needed in all required departmental functions.
Bachelor’s degree; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

PREFERRED YEARS EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, TRAINING, EDUCATION
Master’s degree in recreation, sports management, student affairs, higher education administration or other related field. If in progress, must be completed by date of hire.
Successful professional, internship or graduate assistantship experience in aquatics management.
One year of successful professional experience in aquatics facility management.
REQUIRED LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION
Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) or the ability to obtain within six months of employment.
First Aid/CPR Instructor.
Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or the ability to obtain within six months of employment.
Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) or the ability to obtain within six months of employment.
Wake County Pool Operator Certification or the ability to obtain within six months of employment.
