Penn State Campus Recreation is looking for an experienced and dynamic person to join our team. Under the supervision and direction of the Assistant Director of Competitive Sports, the Coordinator of Competitive Sports will provide leadership and management of all aspects of Club Sports and Intramural Sports programming. Campus Recreation is a department within the Division of Student Affairs that provides recreation and wellness programs to the campus community through the operation and administration of the following: IM Building, McCoy Natatorium, Stone Valley Outdoor Recreation Area, Tennis Center, White Building, Hepper Fitness Center, Outdoor Adventures, Aquatics, Club Sports, Fitness and Wellness Programs, and Intramural Sports. Campus Recreation is comprised of 53 full-time staff and more than 800 student staff members.
The Club Sports program promotes student development and participation in a wide variety of sport activities, provides opportunity for student competition at various levels of play, and fosters social connections and wellbeing. Campus Recreation currently has 56 club sports, with approximately 2,000 student participants annually.
The Intramural Sports program is comprised of more than 25 sports with approximately 8,000 unique participations per year. Activities are held in league, tournament, and individual formats. Participation offerings occur throughout the calendar year.
Specific responsibilities include:
Oversee the proper execution of programmatic plans in accordance with the Campus Recreation mission, vision, and values.
Hire, train, schedule, supervise and evaluate student employees, including supervisors, officials, program managers, and program assistants.
Create and present training and leadership development materials for Club Sport Officers and Competitive Sports staff.
Ensure the proper compliance with risk management processes and protocols for Club Sport and Intramural Sport participants. Maintain all risk management records according to department and University policy.
Review, update, and track of all Club Sport records and documents from Club Sport officers as well as all Intramural Sport records, including sport rules, staffing certifications, team accountability documentation, etc.
Train, guide, and provide leadership opportunities to Club Sport officers on all contents of the Club Sports Officer Manual, policies, procedures, etc.
Manage payroll for Competitive Sports student staff.
Submit reservation requests for Competitive Sports programming, including Intramural events and Club Sport practices and competitions.
Ensure all programming is conducted in accordance with University, department, NIRSA, and sport-specific association risk management standards.
A bachelor’s degree or higher, plus collegiate campus recreation experience. A master’s degree in recreation or sport management, higher education, or a related field is preferred.
Demonstrated experience in student and professional development.
Knowledge of safety and risk management practices as they relate to club sports, intramural sports, and facility management.
A working knowledge of software systems such as IMLeagues and WhenToWork, or similar.
Independent work on assignments, while reviewing progress and updating the Assistant Director as appropriate.
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines.
Attention to detail and the ability to provide and receive feedback.
Willingness to lead students and work in a team-based environment.
Eagerness to support and engage with all departmental and Student Affairs initiatives and efforts, including collaborations with campus partners to create meaningful student experiences.
Ability to take initiative and have flexibility to adapt to shifting workload demands.
Ability to foster a positive climate among a diverse group of staff, student employees and participants.
