The primary purpose of this position is to provide effective leadership and daily operations of the facility, events, and member services staff. This person will have direct supervision of two full-time professional staff, and indirect supervision of two graduate assistants and 40+ student staff. This position is responsible for managing daily operations of the Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness, developing policies and procedures for staff and patrons, facilitating training and development opportunities, and serving an essential role in risk management and safety education across the department.
Percentage Of Time: 50% Key Responsibility: Administration Essential Tasks Work collaboratively with and supervise two full-time Coordinators: Coordinator, Member Services and Coordinator, Facility Operations Assist with the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of student staff with a focus on customer service, facility operations, and risk management. Develop, implement, and assess policies and procedures for facility operations Manage program budget totaling $245K, which includes staff wages, operating expenses, and revenue generation. Review and make recommendations for equipment purchases. Responsible for equipment inventory. Responsible for short- and long-range planning for designated units. Establish and implement goals and objectives for facility operations. Conduct annual performance appraisals for professional staff. Assist the Coordinators with the development and management of assigned budgets. Coordinate assessment of student learning for facility operations and member services. Coordinate marketing needs for facility signage, member appreciation, branded apparel, retail sales, and other promotions. Incorporate stakeholder feedback and assessment data into strategic planning.
Percentage Of Time: 30% Key Responsibility: Facility Management Essential Tasks Oversee the daily operations of Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness. Develop, implement, and assess policies and procedures for facility operations and member services areas. Work with the Associate Director to schedule and facilitate all facility maintenance and housekeeping projects. Work with Coordinator, and Member Services to align policies and procedures related to Kaplan Center members, facility access, patron services, retail sales, etc. Work with Coordinator, Facility Operations in the development and implementation of processes and communication for all aspects of special events in facilities managed by the Department of Recreation and Wellness, which includes both UNCG reservations as well as external group reservations. Provide a high level of customer service to members and patrons, including general questions and disciplinary meetings Develop and administer procedures related to systems control, including but not limited to the key management system, member management software, event management software, and facility access. Develop and maintain working relationships with campus departments, academic units, and external vendors to support university initiatives.
Percentage Of Time: 15% Key Responsibility: Risk Management Essential Tasks Assess and actively mitigate risk for facilities, aquatics, and special events facility spaces and programs. Assist with the review and implementation of the Emergency Action plan. Educate and evaluate employees’ knowledge and response. Instruct American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certification courses. Serve on the department Risk Management Committee. Ensure risk management practices are in compliance with legal requirements, University policies, and other standards. Collaborate with campus partners, including but not limited to Environmental Health & Safety, Emergency Management, General Counsel, University Police, etc.
Percentage Of Time: 5% Key Responsibility: Other Essential Tasks Stay up to date with best practices and emerging industry research, and continually evaluate the program to ensure it meets or exceeds professional standards. Serve on departmental and university committees and work teams. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree Minimum of three years of demonstrated experience in recreation facilities management or programming Direct experience hiring, training, and supervising student employees. Strong communication skills, both oral and written Strong commitment to the development of students to provide leadership training, support academic success, and professional development Direct budget management experience, Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours in addition to regular University hours. Required: Current certification as American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer (or ability to obtain within first 60 days of hire)
Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in Higher Education, Sport/Recreation Management or related field. Experience supervising professional staff or graduate assistants. Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with diverse student populations and equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives. Experience with reservation or recreational software such as Innosoft Fusion, CSI, EMS, WhentoWork and Connect2.
