The Department of University Recreation (UREC) at The University of Texas at Dallas seeks a self-motivated and enthusiastic, professional to join our dynamic team of recreational leaders. The Coordinator will develop, organize, and direct all aspects of comprehensive Aquatics and Outdoors programs with an emphasis on a safe, well-maintained, and adequately staffed environment. Set and achieve standards of program delivery that assures the highest quality programs.
Aquatics essential functions:
Develop, implement and monitor short and long-range planning for aquatic programs, to include a structured training program for lifeguards and water safety instructors, and including monthly training clinics, certification/continuing education programs and opportunities, and evaluations.
Develop and implement University’s swimming classes, swimming lessons, and certification courses, including teaching as an instructor.
Hire and supervise part time and student staff which includes scheduling, assigning work, reviewing performance, recommending salary increases, promotions, or terminations.
Oversees regular maintenance, repair, and operations of the 6 lane, 187,000 gallon pool, as well as the pump room.
Attend classes/lessons and conduct instructor and program evaluations at least once a year.
Develop clear and measurable systems to track and report progress.
Responsible for equipment purchasing and annual inventory compilation. Ensure that all equipment is in working order and usable before the start of each semester.
Develop and implement programmatic risk management protocols and safety audits.
Collect and report monthly participation records.
Outdoors essential functions:
Recruitment, selection, training, certification, supervision and evaluation of student trip leaders; responsible for the skill development through instruction, guidance, and feedback to support growth and ensure program initiatives are accomplished.
Responsible for the annual calendar development and the implementation, scheduling, and evaluation of all outdoor programs. Coordinate 2-3 overnight excursions and 4-6 day trips annually by identifying site locations, obtaining permits, managing transportation and on-site logistics.
Plan, prepare, and teach a variety of clinics and workshops that emphasize Leave No Trace principles.
Assess, evaluate and mitigate risk through direct supervision and management of programs, risk management practices; development and implementation of policies and procedures. Maintain accurate records, reports, agreements. Contribute to departmental risk and safety in collaboration with the UREC risk management committee.
Responsible for purchasing, inventory, maintenance, and cleaning of outdoor equipment.
Assist with long-range strategic planning and assessment; develop and administer assessments/evaluations related to student development programs and learning outcomes; maintain accurate participant and program data and annual reports.
Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Physical Education, Recreation Management or related field and two (2) years of experience recruiting, training and managing aquatic staff and a swimming facility OR an equivalent number of years of related experience. Current certification as American Red Cross Lifeguard Training provider, Adult First Aid/CPR/AED/BBP.
Master’s degree in Exercise Science, Physical Education, Recreation Management, Student Affairs or related field and three to five (3-5) years of directly related aquatics experience within a collegiate recreation program. Current certification as American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Instructor, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Instructor, Water Safety Instructor (WSI), Wilderness First Aid, Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or the ability to obtain CPO license within 3 months after start of employment.
Current membership in one or more of the following professional organizations: NIRSA, CWA, AORE, NOLS, AMGA, AEE, ACCT.

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively and positively with a wide range of constituencies.
Must have strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective, working relationships. Exceptional customer service orientation is essential.
Demonstrate strong problem solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems as well as devise solutions. Must also be able to work independently as well as to work collaboratively.
Candidate must possess strong organizational, planning and time management skills with the ability to manage concurrent projects and handle multiple priorities at once. Must also have a strong focus on attention to detail. Strong project management skills are essential.
Experience with Microsoft Office.
Collaborate with nationally accredited aquatics and safety certifying organizations to host workshops and certification programs.
Serve on designated Student Affairs and University committees.
Initiate collaborations with campus partners within Student Affairs and academic units to develop and implement programs and events that contribute to student success and foster relationships with interested groups, and special events.
Serve as the on-call manager on duty.
During certain times of year, this position requires routine evening and/or weekend supervision due to the nature of program activities.
Reports to the Associate Director of Programs. Day-to-day functions are accomplished with minimal guidance or supervision in accordance with established policies and directives. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, acquires and maintains certifications, develops professional contacts with colleagues, attends professional development courses.
Physical/Environmental Demands: Swim, bend, crawl, reach above shoulders, carry lift over 25-50 lbs., squat, climb, handle objects, kneel, stand, push/pull, walk for long distances, sit for long periods of time. This position includes exposure to marked changes in temperature or humidity; drives motorized equipment.
