Program Description:
The Associate Director-Outdoor Pursuits performs administrative duties in the management and coordination of a large, specialized project and program. Under general supervision, performs varied and complex administrative duties requiring independent judgment and the application of established policies and procedures. May provide supervision and direction to clerical, paraprofessional or professional staff members. Additionally, and within these duties this leader is an essential position with the Department of University Recreation with primary responsibility leading three distinct but interconnected programs; The Outdoor Pursuits Center, the 53-feet tall bouldering and climbing wall, and an extensive outdoor trips program.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Interview, hire, train, schedule and evaluate one full-time professional, Program Manager of Outdoor Pursuits
Interview, hire, train, schedule and evaluate 35-50 undergraduate student staff
Coordinate and host program specific staff meetings and development workshops
Develop and coordinate the annual budget of $175,000+ for the Outdoor Pursuits program
Create and ensure all risk management procedures specific to the programs directly responsible for are adhered to by program staff
Maintain accurate inventory of supplies and equipment
Embrace a spirt of entrepreneurship ensuring sound business practices are a part of the revenue generating equation of this program
Ensure quality and durable equipment are provided through the OPC rental shop, climbing wall operation and for all trips
Develop and coordinate a robust trips program balancing the importance of risk management protocols with the experiential education component of the program
Develop and execute program specific assessment tools and use feedback to enhance program satisfaction
Assist with semesterly department events. Examples include Red Raider WelcomeFest, Winter Showcase, NIRSA Day, Random Acts of Kindness Week, etc.
Represent Texas Tech University and the Department of University Recreation as an engaged member of various national, regional, or state professional organizations
Complete other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in the area of specialization or closely related field
Four years of related administrative and technical experience
Additional job-related education may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Five years of full-time experience in the operation of an outdoor education program preferably in a university setting with a leadership role in two of the following program areas:
Climbing wall
Extended trip program
Outdoor gear retail and rental shop
One national certification such as Climbing Wall Instructor, Leave No Trace, Wilderness First Responder Instructor, etc.,
Two years of leadership and supervisory experience
Ability to work as part of and lead a team that collaborates effectively with colleagues
Ability to thrive in an environment that values high expectations, accountability, and balanced lifestyle decisions
Strong communication and presentation skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in the area of specialization or closely related field
Three years of budget creation and execution with an emphasis on revenue generating programs and services
Five years of progressively increasing levels of responsibilities and supervision
Multiple national certifications specific to higher-education, outdoor education, etc.,
