Graduate Assistant – Facilities & Reservations
DESCRIPTION: The Graduate Assistant will be responsible for assisting with the daily operations of the Student Recreation Center at Valdosta State University. Serving as a leader of the Facility Supervisor staff, this position is responsible for facility policy enforcement, training and maintaining a facility supervisor staff, managing building reservations, and overseeing select departmental special events.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversee the enforcement of facility rules and regulations; assess and refine building policies and procedures
Manage and develop a team of 8-15 student facility supervisors
Assist in developing student-staff training, in-services, and skill assessments
Manage, organize, and provide logistical support for facility reservations
Learn and operate EMS (Event Management System) for all Campus Recreation facility rentals
Aide in the planning, preparation, and execution of Campus Recreation's annual golf tournament
Assist with coordinating and preparing the department for national, regional and state conferences
Work cooperatively with other Campus Recreation staff members and assist with departmental special events
Other duties as assigned
Graduate Assistant- Marketing & Promotions
DESCRIPTION: The Graduate Assistant will be responsible for the design, implementation, and management of all marketing materials and plans for Valdosta State University Campus Recreation. The Graduate Assistant will be responsible for developing content, creating marketing plans, managing the marketing team as well as developing, maintaining, and managing VSU Campus Recreation’s brand. This position will also have responsibilities with wellness programming and student development.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manage a team of three to six student assistants, including a graphic designer, photographer, videographer, promotions representatives, and team leaders
Hire, train, supervise and evaluate student assistants
Develop, organize and implement marketing and promotional plan; monitor & manage department website, develop and approve all print materials, and monitor TV promotional displays (REACH board & MTV U)
Assist with developing promotional plan each semester for all Campus Recreation departments; assist with scheduling promotion dates and events on campus and making sure materials are prepared
Assist with the development of marketing videos and advertisements
Monitor social media accounts and plan/implement several social media campaigns each semester
Serve as liaison for Creative Services, Print Services, The Spectator (student newspaper), and Information Technology
Assist in developing department-wide student training & workshops
Assist with coordinating and preparing the department for national, regional, and state conferences
Work cooperatively with other Campus Recreation staff members and assist with departmental special events
Other duties as assigned
Graduate Assistant- CORE Outdoors
DESCRIPTION: The Graduate Assistant of CORE will report to the Coordinator of CORE Outdoors. The Graduate Assistant is responsible for assisting with the administration of CORE which includes: the climbing wall, outdoor rental center, challenge course, and outdoor trips. The Graduate Assistant will create a meaningful experience within all parts of the CORE Outdoors and Campus Recreation
. RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist in the planning, marketing, scheduling, and implementation of all aspects of the four major areas of CORE Outdoors.
Recruit, hire, train, schedule, evaluate, and retain facilitators, trip leaders, climbing wall, team leaders, and program coordinators.
Develop, review and recommend revisions to all CORE Outdoors policies and procedures.
Maintain daily office hours, as well as nighttime hours for classes and weekend supervision of outdoor trips and challenge course programs.
Assist in developing department-wide student training & workshops
Assist with coordinating and preparing the department for national, regional and state conferences
Work cooperatively with other Campus Recreation staff members and assist with departmental special events
Other duties as assigned
Area-Specific QUALIFICATIONS:
GA will need a minimum of a bachelor's Degree with one year of experience in Outdoor Programming.
Outdoor Recreation, Recreation Administration, and Adventure Education or related degrees are preferred.
Experience in at least two of the following activities areas with certification preferred; Camping, canoeing, backpacking, sea kayaking, rock climbing, climbing walls, and challenge courses.
Experience with outdoor rental equipment and maintenance preferred.
Applicants must have a valid driver’s license.
CPR and First aid certification with Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder preferred.
STARTING DATE: Fall July 1, 2023 (negotiable)
NOTES: The Position is a 1-year appointment (10 months) with an additional second year based on performance. Full tuition waived (In and out-of-state, up to 15 credit hours for fall and 15 credit hours for spring, summer tuition waiver of up to 9 credit hours). Salary is based on 10 monthly periods (Fall/Spring). Summer hourly employment is also available. Must pay student fees (approximately $1,100) Position is contingent upon the applicant's acceptance to the Valdosta State University Graduate School.
General RESPONSIBILITIES: • Oversee the enforcement of facility rules and regulations • Manage and develop a team of lifeguards, water safety instructors, and American Red Cross instructors • Work with other departmental graduate assistants to assess and refine building policies and procedures • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate student assistants • Assist in developing student-staff training & in-services • Assist with the establishment of technical skill benchmark assessments • Work cooperatively with other departmental staff members and assist with departmental special events • Maintain an active presence in all Campus Recreation special events • Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS: • Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in Recreation and Leisure Service Management, Higher Education Administration, Sport Management, or related field. • Minimum of two years experience in staff supervision; preferably experience with a Recreational Sports program or special event program. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, word processing, as well as strong interpersonal skills. • Proven ability to recruit, develop, lead, supervise and motivate student personnel • Positive attitude, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations, and excellent customer service skills. • Proficient with all Microsoft office applications; proficient using Windows computers. • Strong foundation in customer service; demonstrable skill set in conflict management. Qualified candidates must be accepted by VSU Graduate School in the desired field of study* before the final offer can be made for the position. *Graduate students pursuing VSU’s Higher Education Master’s Program preferred*
COMPENSATION: Stipend for 10 months and Full Tuition Waiver
