This is a full-time professional administrating staff position with the Department of Recreational Sports, a vital component of the Division of Student Affairs and assists the Executive Director of Health and Wellbeing in oversight and departmental operations of recreational sports personnel, facilities, programs, and operations. Performs complex managerial work providing direction and guidance in strategic operations, growth, and planning for operational area.
Duties & Responsibilities
Provides direct oversight for the recreational sports department.
Primary duties will include staff supervision, financial management, facilities and maintenance, capital improvement and construction, programs and assessment, and marketing/promotions.
Programs to include intramural sports and fields, club and virtual sports, outdoor programs, university camp, coliseum operations, informal recreation, aquatics, fitness, administrative operations, and student employment. Future programs may be added to responsibilities.
Develops and assures compliance with risk management policies and procedures, emergency response plans, and business continuity plans.
Provides scheduling, event coordination, facility agreements, certificates of insurance, and compliance with any departmental or university policies related to these areas.
Establishes and implements goals, objectives, KPI’s and targets for operational effectiveness and quality improvement.
Collaborates with campus partners both within and external to Student Affairs for services and programs.
Builds and maintains credible business and personal relations with partners internal and external to Sam Houston State University to support the values and mission of recreational sports for student engagement, student experience, student and staff/faculty health and wellness, and community engagement.
Maintains a strong awareness of knowledge of industry standards and trends through engagement in professional organizations and continuing education. Mentors and leads the recreational sports team with a focus on best practices and team engagement.
Other Specifications
Requires excellent interpersonal skills, a team player, computer skills and knowledge, and membership of the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA).
May require driving and operating a university vehicle; therefore, a valid Texas driver license and driving record acceptable to the university’s insurance carrier is required.
Working hours may vary to include evenings/weekends to support departmental needs and operations.
Serves on university, community, state, or national committees as needed.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Up to 20% of this position, over the fiscal year during off-peak periods, may be performed remotely as determined by the supervisor.
This position may be designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Sports Management, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Human Performance, or related field required.
Five years’ experience working in administration and management of higher education recreational programming and operations to include budget management, capital project planning, and assessment.
Master’s degree preferred.
Registered Collegiate Recreational Sports Professional (RCRSP) preferred.
Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience.
