Reporting to the Assistant Dean and Director Tiernan Field House (TFH), the Assistant Director of Health and Wellness is responsible for implementing and evaluating evidence-based and needs-based health education programs that are research driven, best practices related to the eight dimensions of wellness with an emphasis on mental health, alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Efforts will focus on primary prevention, harm, and risk reduction for the campus community. The Assistant Director will be responsible for and support the management of the day to day operations of the Field House.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Health & Wellness
Assist the Assistant Dean and Director with the development, implementation, and evaluation of the health and wellness peer (student) program to address educational and prevention strategies.
Develop and implement evidence-based and needs-based health and wellness marketing and promotion through social media and other modalities, including the student health and wellness newsletter. Provide and promote educational opportunities to support mental health initiatives, prevention, and awareness, such as Fresh Check Day, Mental Health Matters and Movies for Mental Health.
Assist with the development, implementation, and maintenance of a harm reduction alcohol education program and develop campus-wide Alcohol, Tobacco, and other Drugs (ATOD) programming including, BASICS and CASICS programs a social norming campaign, and STEP-Up Bystander Intervention training.
Collaborate with Scripps campus departments and The Claremont Colleges’ departments to implement health promotion initiatives, working closely with Health Education Outreach, Residential Life, Academic Resources, SCORE, Student Activities, Monsour Counseling and Psychological Services, and Student Advocates for Sexual Violence.
Implement culturally sensitive health and wellness education programs and individual consultations based on students’ needs, interests, developmental stages, and learning styles.
Facility Management
Assist in the supervision of all facilities and programs within the Tiernan Field House, Pool and Soccer/Lacrosse Field including, but not limited to fitness programs, physical education classes, open recreation, and special events as needed, including the supervision of student and part-time staff.
Participate in all staff trainings (Fall and Spring), team, and community building activities for Tiernan Field House staff (70+).
Generate accurate and detailed reports on operational activities, accident/injury reports, incident reports, and supervisory logs.
Conduct weekday/weekend facility opening and closing procedures to ensure the security of staff and facilities.
Make supervisory level decisions in emergency situations and contact emergency personnel, as needed.
Student Supervision
Hire, train, and supervise the Peer Health Educators, Marketing Associates, and Group Fitness Instructors.
Prepare and implement training curricula, including ongoing professional development for Peer Health Educators and Marketing Associates.
Student Affairs
Serve on the on-call crisis response rotation and participate in relevant trainings and meetings, including evenings, weekends, and 24/7 response.
Participate in the development, implementation and management of student affairs projects, initiatives, and committees as assigned.
Serve on campus-wide initiatives that develop, promote, and implement campaigns that support health and wellness.
Other
Provide active support for the College’s Principles of Community and Principles of Diversity in the performance of job duties.
Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
Individuals must possess knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
Ability to work with diverse communities as it relates to health and wellness, including a sensitivity to issues and concerns related to a historical women’s institution.
Experience with supervision of a fitness facility, student staff, and exercise sound decisions from a risk management perspective.
Knowledge and experience with multimedia communications (including computer technology), research methodologies, group facilitation, writing, public speaking, and use of teaching aids.
Proficient in motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral skills training, peer education advising and/or required online education management.
Previous experience working with national organizations: Bacchus, NASPA, American College Health Association.
Demonstrated knowledge of collegiate wellness and community health promotion theories, methods, strategies, tactics, and current issues affecting college students.
Sensitivity and awareness of the confidential nature of health-related information and FERPA regulations.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in Health Education/Health Promotion, Public Health, or other area related to defined responsibilities and experience in a capacity related to the duties to be performed or any combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and ability to perform the job. Master’s degree in Health Education/Health Promotion, Public Health, or other related area is preferred.
Required one to three years’ experience working in health education and/or health promotion experience working with wellness and health education programs, targeting alcohol, other drug issues, nutrition, and sexual health, preferably on a residential college campus.
LICENSES / CERTIFICATES:
REQUIRED Certifications: American Red Cross CPR Pro and First Aid certifications within the first 60 days of hire.
PREFERRED Certifications: Lifeguarding from the American Red Cross and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, and First Aid from the American Red Cross.

HOURS & CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS:
This is a regular, full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible, and exempt position. The regular hours for this position are Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm. Hours may vary due to the needs of the department or College.
Salary range: $64,480 to $67,000 annualized. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.
Evening and weekend hours may be required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Supervises student employees including Peer Health Educators, and Marketing Assistants.
