This is a full-time professional administrating staff position with the Department of Recreational Sports, a vital component of the Division of Student Affairs. This position is responsible for overseeing or assisting in the planning, organizing, directing, and controlling of the daily operations and personnel within the Outdoor Program, Bearkat Camp, Challenge Course, Student Development and Gear Rentals. Evening and weekend work required as position demands.
The Assistant Director for Outdoor Recreation reports directly to the Associate Director of Programs and Assessment.
Duties and Responsibilities
Coordinates the outdoor recreation program of Sam Houston State University (SHSU) to include climbing center, adventure trips, gear rental, Bearkat Camp, Bearkat Transfer Camp (extended orientation programs for incoming students that focus on the spirit, pride and tradition of Sam Houston State University).
Assists in coordinating the University Camp, challenge course and student development.
Assists in the marketing and supervision of Bearkat Camp and other outdoor programs.
Assists in providing outdoor programming opportunities through the campus outdoor recreation program to the university community.
Serves on committees as needed.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Specifications
National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA), Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education (AORE), Professional Climbing Instructors Association (PCIA), Wilderness First Responder and certification desirable.
First aid, CPR, and computer experience helpful.
Must possess well developed communicative and interpersonal skills essential to working with small and large groups.
Working hours may vary as required by the hiring department, including evening and weekend work.
Attention and care is required in the performance of duties to prevent injury to self or others.
Up to 20% of this position, over the fiscal year during off-peak periods, may be performed remotely as determined by the supervisor.
This position may be designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in recreation, parks and recreation, sports management or a related field.
Two years of experience in a professional, supervisory capacity of a recreation-oriented program or experience in a related field.
