University of Pittsburgh Campus Recreation continues to expand our team in preparing for our new 278,000 square foot, 9-story recreation and wellness center currently under construction. This facility is designed as a transformative space in the heart of campus serving as the intersection of well-being for the Pitt community, and houses Campus Recreation and elements of Student Health Services and University Counseling Center.
As part of the Student Affairs Wellness team, Campus Recreation promotes the overall health and wellness of our entire community providing inclusive recreational and fitness opportunities. The Assistant Director of Outdoor & Adventure Pursuits is responsible for leadership, daily management, and oversight of outdoor and adventure-based recreation facilities and programs ensuring offerings reflect the comprehensive needs, interests, and desires of the Pitt community.
Main areas of supervision include outdoor and adventure recreation programs, trips, and workshops; indoor bouldering/climbing center; outdoor recreation equipment rental center; student-run bike shop operation; emerging outdoor and adventure programs; collaborative outdoor and adventure recreation initiatives. The Assistant Director provides facility, program, and staff leadership; oversees staff training and development; manages facility and program budgets; oversees risk management; leads marketing and promotion efforts; and develops, manages, and evaluates emerging and collaborative programming. Assistant Director ensures facilities, program offerings, and work environment align with diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility strategies.
Required and Preferred Education and Experience:
This position requires baccalaureate credentials and/or equivalent education and independent experience. Bachelor’s degree in recreation management/administration, outdoor/adventure education/recreation, physical education, education, or related field, and minimum 3 years of progressive related experience preferably in a higher education environment.
Knowledge of best practices in adventure recreation programming, instruction, and trip leading (e.g., Professional Climbing Instructors Association, American Camp Association, American Mountain Guides Association); current safety and risk management protocols; and leadership development.
Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills; ability to lead and mentor students; demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities with successful outcomes. Familiarity with Microsoft Office software.
Current Wilderness First Responder, Wilderness First Aid, CPR/AED or similar certification preferred or obtained within 6 months of hiring.
