The Aquatics & Safety Coordinator will manage the daily operations of the Aquatics & Safety program, which includes, but not limited to, reservations, swim lesson programs, open swim, and running American Red Cross certification classes.
Primarily administering the day-to-day operations of the natatorium, this position will coordinate and oversee program delivery, quality control, risk management, student staffing, scheduling, advertising, marketing content, purchasing, promotion, inventory, repairs and security. Additionally, this position will aid in the recruitment, supervision, training, evaluation, scheduling and documentation of student staff skill development, support in the supervision of events and programs while ensuring risk management planning and execution meet department standards. This will include some nights, weekend work and point of contact during holiday breaks. Other duties may include, but are not limited to, direct collaboration for achievement of the vision, mission, and strategic goals of Campus Recreation.
Supervisor: Assistant Director of Campus Recreation
Facilities:
Oversee the daily operations of the 9,000 sq. ft. Student Recreation Center’s (SRC) natatorium that features a 142,000-gallon lap pool and a 52,000-gallon leisure pool
Assist with daily custodial efforts and maintenance of the SRC pools
Manage and evaluate all routine events, special events and rentals scheduled in the SRC pool
Work with department maintenance staff to ensure all routine preventative maintenance is being completed for all pools in both the pump room and on deck
Maintain pool equipment for SRC pool in addition to program materials for American Red Cross
Hiring/Training:
Recruit, hire, train, schedule, evaluate, and mentor aquatic staff (approximately 20 Lifeguards, Head Guards, Water Safety Instructors and Lifeguard Instructors)
Supervise one Graduate Assistant of Aquatics & Safety
Administer policies and procedures, employee standards and expectations
Provide leadership and effective management to ensure goals and objectives are attained
Facilitate weekly lifeguard in-service trainings in addition to monthly LGI and WSI in-services
Conduct routine meetings, skill testing, and orientations for all aquatic staff
Programming:
Operate swim lesson program (Youth, Adult, and One-on-One Lessons)
Continually generate and implement aquatic programming, including but not limited to, incentive programs, clinics, and facility rentals.
Implement American Red Cross classes that currently teach life-saving skills to over 300 people a year
Work with marketing department to coordinate aquatics promotion to campus and community via a variety of platforms, including, but not limited to, social media, flyers, bulletin boards, tabling, and videos
Facilitate Campus Recreation risk management by scheduling and implementing department wide safety and drill weeks
Accounting/Statistics:
Develop, administer, and analyze $112,000 aquatics budget and financial records, and more than $37,000 in revenue generation.
Manage student payroll and hours for 20 aquatic student staff and one Graduate Assistant.
Purchase and maintain inventory for aquatic facilities as well as equipment and products for swim lessons, American Red Cross courses and additional programming.
Implement annual assessment for Aquatics & Safety that includes year-to-year data trend collections and assistance with strategic planning.
Maintain usage and statistical data for all programming, including but not limited to, patron usage at all pool events, American Red Cross courses, clinics, special events, etc.
Evaluation:
Update and maintain performance plans and reviews for Aquatic & Safety staff (swim instructors, lifeguard, head lifeguards, graduate assistant).
Respond in a timely manner to feedback provided by constituents.
Conduct regular assessments on all programming and facilities.
Ensure facility and equipment replacement plans are implemented and updated.
Develop procedures, protocols, and trainings to ensure safety of participants and staff.
Utilize all evaluations and assessments when planning and preparing for future.
Ensure compliance of staff with industry standard safety and risk management practices, facility inspections, and established Campus Recreation policies and procedures.
Membership in University/Student Affairs Committees.
Attendance at Campus Recreation staff meetings and other related activities.
Attend and participate in conference/workshops as related to assigned program areas.
Maintain communication with colleagues in the field of campus recreation and/or aquatics.
A flexible work schedule which at times will require frequent attendance during evenings and weekends. Additional hours may be required during peak periods.

Minimum Qualifications:
One year experience supervising lifeguards, overseeing budgets, and managing recreational aquatics OR an equivalent year of related experience.
Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, as well as the ability to exercise good judgement.
Computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel.
Must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver’s license. A driving record check will be required of selected applicant.
Current American Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED certification (or current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification) or ability to obtain within 45 days.
Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification or ability to obtain within one year.
Preferred Qualifications:
Thorough knowledge of campus recreation as demonstrated by a minimum of one year of full-time employment in a college or university level campus recreation program.
Knowledge in employee selection, training and evaluation of staff.
Skill in developing and implementing risk management protocols.
American Red Cross Certified Instructor for CPR, AED and First Aid.
Previous or current certification(s) in AFO or CPO, American Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED, and/or Lifeguard Instructor certifications.
Current or previous certification in American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and/or Water Safety Instructor Trainer certification.
Current or previous certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor and/or Lifeguard Instructor Trainer certification.
Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Recreation Administration, or related field from accredited institution of higher education.
Master’s degree in Physical Education, Recreation Administration, or related field from accredited institution of higher education.
