This position provides leadership and performs organizational duties to assure the successful operation of, and mitigation of risk for, the Climbing Wall, Rental Center, Outdoor Trips, and Workshop Programs. This Assistant Director is to conduct personnel recruitment, hiring, training, and evaluations of graduate and undergraduate staff; student development and assessment; programming; budget development and administration; interpretation and application of departmental and university policies and procedures. This position is responsible for staying current with industry norms, in addition to providing and maintaining inclusive and innovative programs, services, and facilities as it pertains to their area. Collaboration with colleges and departments throughout Academic Affairs, Student Life and Wellbeing, Athletics, and Business and Finance; and participation in and promotion of Campus Recreation & Wellness programs, activities, and events is essential. Coordinate and oversee facility-related problems and repairs with the Associate Director of Facilities related to oversight areas. Provide Leadership for Campus Recreation student staff and help develop student success opportunities.
Develop, promote, administer, implement, and evaluate all aspects of the Outdoor Recreation programs (Trips, Workshops, and Classes) within suitable industry standards. Employee will lead and instruct programs for the Outdoor Venture Center — trips, workshops, and classes in outdoor pursuit activities. Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate a Graduate Assistant to assist in all aspects of OVC programs and services.
Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate program staff. Trip and Workshop staff training should advise students on required University policies and procedures related to travel, appropriate use of funds, and risk management. Additional topics and issues include; program planning and implementation, leadership, activity related skills, activity risk management, navigation, first aid, and documentation requirements.
Develop, promote, administer, implement, and evaluate all aspects of the Outdoor Equipment Rental program. Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate student staff. Oversee the process of conducting equipment safety inspections, the provision of proper maintenance for rental center equipment, maintain an accurate inventory, and purchase equipment suitable to the needs of the Outdoor Venture Center and its rental clients.
Develop, promote, administer, implement, and evaluate all aspects the Climbing Wall and associated programs within suitable industry standards. Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate student staff. Oversee the process of conducting safety inspections and the provision of proper maintenance for the climbing wall and support equipment. Maintain and accurate inventory of equipment. Purchase replacement suitable replacement equipment as necessary.
Serve as member of Campus Recreation and Wellness Leadership Team. Assist in developing joint programs, policies, and departmental operations. Complete departmental administrative duties including reports, budgets, purchasing, and statistics. Participate in programs and services offered through Campus Recreation & Wellness.
Serve on University, Division and Subdivision committees. Collaborate on associated programs and seek opportunities for academic partnerships.
Represent the University to various community, state, regional and national organizations; and stay current in industry practices, trends, and technologies.
Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Physical Education, Sports Management, Student Affairs or related field.
Two year full-time, administrative experience in outdoor recreation (NOTE: 2 years Graduate Assistantship = 1 year full-time experience.)
