Position Overview:
As part of the energetic management team for Recreation and Wellness Services, the Assistant Director, Competitive Sports and Outdoor Facilities provides vision and creativity for the competitive sports and outdoor facilities areas while enhancing the students’ co-curricular learning experiences.
The Assistant Director, Competitive Sports and Outdoor Facilities will develop, implement, and manage inclusive activities in the Competitive Sports area, and Outdoor Facilities. The Assistant Director will provide leadership and support the club sports, and youth programs areas. This position reports to an Associate Director, Ice Arena, Competitive Sports and Outdoor Facilities.
The Assistant Director has a major leadership role in ensuring that students are provided with outstanding programming opportunities consistent with the mission of the Department, Division, and the University.
This position has responsibility in contributing to a positive work environment where student employees are challenged and given the opportunity to succeed. The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to the development of students through leadership training, supporting academic success, and professional development.
Dimensions of Position:
Provide leadership and oversight of intramural sports programs, youth camps, and community programs.
Provide leadership and support to the club sports program.
Assist in the oversight of outdoor facilities, including equipment, operations, rentals, scheduling, and concessions operations.
Supervise area-specific student staff and a full-time Recreation Program Coordinator, Competitive Sports and Youth Camps.

WHERE WE'RE LOCATED - We are located on Kent State University’s Kent Campus in Kent, Ohio, which is in northeast Ohio. Recreation and Wellness Services maintains several facilities across campus, including the Beverly J. Warren Student Recreation and Wellness Center, Ice Arena, Disc Golf course, outdoor courts, tennis courts, and outdoor sports fields.
Required Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in Sports Administration, Recreation Administration, Physical Education or a related field.
A minimum of three years of experience in recreation management.
Previous supervisory experience of student staff.
Current knowledge of officiating in various sports.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in Sport Administration, Recreation Administration, Physical Education, or a relevant field.
Detail oriented, highly organized and the ability to deal with a variety of situations and people in a balanced way.
Personnel management with student staff supervisory experience.
Understanding intramural sports, sport clubs, youth program and outdoor facilities operations.
Experience training sports officials.
Experience working as a high school or collegiate sports official.
Physical Requirements:
Light work – Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects.
Incumbent must be able to communicate with others.
May require occasional travel on and off-campus.
