Job Summary: The Assistant Director for Fitness provides overall leadership and oversight for Group Exercise and Personal Training. Contributes to the success of University Recreation through strategic management of Fitness Programs which include group exercise classes, personal training, Pilates reformer studio, well-being initiatives, and other instructional opportunities. Provides structured programming options for students and the University community from early morning into the evening and weekends. Builds community.; Promotes healthy activity and encourages healthy lifestyles. Oversees instruction of personal training preparation courses, continuing education workshops, and on-site nationally accredited fitness certifications. Assumes a leadership role in risk management and due diligence for the program.
Supervises two (2) full-time coordinators and approximately 50-70 student and part-time employees for group exercise and personal training. Focuses on program development, management, and leadership. Plans calendar of events and schedules. Promotes programs. Establishes goals. Coordinates special events. Trains staff. Creates program guidelines. Builds patron and client relations. Manages equipment. Coordinates payroll. Creates program reports. Oversees budget. Fosters an environment for diversity, inclusion, and outreach through both programs and services offered. Reports to and works closely with the Director for UREC Programs on strategic planning to ensure that programmatic, financial, and experiential goals are met.
Manages relationships with campus and community partners (Wellness & Work-Life, Health Promotion & Wellness, Capstone Village, etc.) to coordinate efforts, identify new opportunities, and create mutually beneficial partnerships. Organizes and supports programs that seek to improve the health and wellness for University of Alabama students, faculty, and staff. Develops and presents educational presentations.
Completes required training and promoting a safe, hospitable, and respectful workplace. Holds staff accountable for completion of required training. Has personal accountability for financial reporting and responsibility for establishing, enforcing, and following internal processes and controls as outlined in UA policies and procedures.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience; OR Master's degree and one (1) year of experience.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of experience; or Master's degree and two (2) years of experience. CPR and First Aid certification or ability to obtain within two (2) months of employment.
Current certifications in group exercise and/or personal training. Certification received through a national certifying agency (ACE, ACSM, NSCA, NASM, AFAA, etc.) OR NCCA (National Commission for Certifying Agencies) accredited fitness certification. Certifications for group exercise and personal training must be obtained within six (6) months of hire date.
Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.
Skills and Knowledge: Progressive understanding of fitness programs, best practices, and industry standards. Exemplary organizational skills. Understanding of the diverse needs of established and emerging group exercise classes and personal training practices. Ability to prioritize multiple work responsibilities in time-sensitive situations, work with limited supervision, and supervise staff. Understanding of risk management principles. Ability to analyze and present data summary findings, share insight, think strategically, and propose recommendations. Effective customer relations skills. Strong interpersonal skills. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Comprehensive understanding of personal computers and standard software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
Demonstrated commitment to expand multicultural knowledge, awareness, and skills as evidenced through: demonstrating self-awareness; understanding and valuing others; demonstrating knowledge of social inequalities; interacting effectively with a diversity of people; fostering equity and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in exercise science, exercise physiology, fitness management, physical education, recreation, or health education. Experience training and supervising employees to accomplish program operations. Work experience in university or corporate health/fitness setting. Experience with public speaking to diverse audiences. Certification by American College of Sports Medicine, American Council on Exercise, Aerobic and Fitness Association of America, National Strength and Conditioning Association, Pilates Reformer training or certification (Balanced Body, Stott, Peak, NCPT)
