Graduate Assistants will receive $10,000 for a 10-month appointment (divided and paid bi-weekly) and a scholarship of $6,000 ($3,000 each semester).
Graduate student is responsible for paying his/her own fees. Registration to the state and national NIRSA conferences will be paid. Summer employment is available. Health and optional insurance benefits may be available.

Sam Houston State University is pleased to announce the following Graduate Assistantships for the Spring 2024 semester (Jan. 4 start) or 2024-2025 Academic Year (Aug. 1 start) in the following area:
Operations (Facilities) (Jan. 4 or Aug. 1, 2024)
Intramural and Club Sports (Jan. 4 or Aug. 1, 2024)
Fitness (Jan. 4 or Aug. 1, 2024)
All positions will assist in guiding the Campus Recreation Department in a manner consistent with the goals of the department, Division of Student Affairs, and the mission of Sam Houston State University.
OPERATIONS (Facilities)
This position reports to the Senior Assistant Director of Informal Recreation. This position helps supervise the day-to-day operations of the assigned program areas and provides day-to-day direction, guidance and supervision to the students assigned to support the campus recreation programs in the assigned program areas.
Primary Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate undergraduate student staff
Supervise the Campus Recreation Center (CRC) mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekend hours as needed
Develop and conduct student staff orientation, in-service trainings, and workshops
Assist with payroll processes for student staff
Assist with purchasing, inventory, and maintenance of facility and equipment
Assist with the scheduling of facilities, including the CRC, McAdams Tennis Courts, and sand volleyball courts
Perform other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications: Candidates must have knowledge/experience in campus recreation or sports management, strong human relations skills, and acceptance into SHSU graduate school. CPR/First Aid Certification preferred. Must maintain a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester to hold eligibility.

INTRAMURAL AND CLUB SPORTS
This position reports to the Assistant Director of Intramural Sports and the Assistant Director of Club Sports. This position helps supervise the day-to-day operations of the assigned program areas and provides day-to-day direction, guidance and supervision to the students assigned to support the campus recreation programs in the assigned program areas.
Primary Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate a staff of approximately 35 students
Develop and conduct Officials training clinics
Supervise Intramural and Club Sports events during the evening and on weekends with the help of student staff
Assist in the marketing and promotion of the Intramural and Club Sport Programs
Evaluate and recommend changes for policies, procedures, activities, and staff as needed
Help with the creation of league scheduling, facility reservation and field maintenance upkeep including, but not limited to, grooming artificial turf fields, painting fields, cleaning facilities, and preventative maintenance
Assist with purchasing, inventory and maintenance of all equipment used for programs
Direct oversight of 3-5 Club Sport Teams and Club Sports Council with aid in the development of philanthropy and fundraising opportunities
Collect and track relevant information for clubs such as rosters, participation numbers, and results
Assist with policy development for Intramural Sports and Club Sports
Perform other duties as assigned.

Candidates must have knowledge/experience in campus recreation or sports management, strong human relations skills, and acceptance into SHSU graduate school. CPR/First Aid Certification preferred. FITNESS
This position reports to the Assistant Director of Fitness. This position helps supervise the day-to-day operations of the assigned program areas and provides day-to-day direction, guidance and supervision to the students assigned to support the campus recreation programs in the assigned program areas.
Primary Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate student staff;
Assist in teaching Group Fitness Instructor Training;
Assist in teaching the Personal Trainer Training;
Assist in conducting and planning monthly staff meetings and staff development opportunities;
Maintain equipment and assess equipment needs;
Assist with the development and coordination fitness special events;
Inventory control of equipment and music;
Plan and evaluate program publicity;
Update and implement instructor training and staff manuals;
Assist with the administrative duties including, but not limited to payroll and participation counts;
Teach group fitness classes;
Personal train as needed;
Complete a graduate assistant project in year 1 and year 2;
Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications: Nationally recognized Group Fitness and/or Personal Training Certification (ACE, AFAA, ACSM, NSCA, NASM) required. Experience instructing group fitness classes and/or personal training is required. Candidates must have knowledge/experience in campus recreation sports or sports management, strong human relations skills, and acceptance into SHSU graduate school. CPR/First Aid Certification preferred.

All successful Graduate Assistant candidates will demonstrate the following:
Bachelor's Degree in a related area
Acceptance into the SHSU Graduate program and enrollment in 6 hours or more in graduate courses. If you are a new graduate student at SHSU and begin work during the summer, you must be enrolled in graduate summer courses.
Computer knowledge, including proficiency with Windows-based computer system and Microsoft applications.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies
Excellent customer service skills
