Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director – Fitness, the Coordinator – Fitness Programs administers a comprehensive group fitness program and coordinates fitness related special events appropriate for various populations within the university community promoting the development of student leaders and healthy lifestyles through physical activity. Duties include but are not limited to: the creation and implementation of a semester based group exercise class schedule consisting of a variety of formats; coordination of an instructor training and certification program; direct oversight of equipment inventory and preventative maintenance management and/or replacement as it relates to group fitness programming; budgetary oversight for all group fitness programming; responsible for student and part-time staff personnel management related to group fitness programming. The Coordinator- Fitness Programs will work to develop relationships across campus to partner and host special events related to fitness and well-being.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Group Fitness and Instructional Fitness Program Management
Create, implement and supervise the day-to-day operations of a variety of organized group fitness programs featuring fitness classes, instructional based fitness classes, participant incentive programs, and special events such as Yoga on the Lawn, Labor Stay Weekend special classes, and other one-day, smaller scale events highlighting the fitness class offerings.
Create and administer instructor training and mechanics for a variety of group exercise/fitness class formats.
Coordinate and instruct an annual group fitness instructor preparatory course with a national organization (ACE University, AFAA, ACSM).
Manage aspects of group fitness programming such as studio inventory, equipment repair, scheduling, form tracking, and participant statistics through facility software management systems such as Fusion, Connect 2 and SubItUP.
Communicate to the Assistant Director- Fitness the purchasing and inventory needs regarding equipment and supplies for all group fitness studios.
Collaborate with the Assistant Director- Fitness to evaluate and ensure compliance with University, departmental, and programmatic risk management policies.
Assist in the annual review, revision, and implementation of group fitness policies and procedures.
Assist in managing cases of participant dissatisfaction and discipline participants and student employees for inappropriate behavior according to Campus Recreation and University policies.
Work with department marketing staff to communicate relevant fitness events and information to participants via website, social media, etc.
Personnel Management
Recruit, hire, train and directly supervise a minimum number of instructors to sustain comprehensive group fitness class offerings.
Develop and coordinate regular meetings and trainings.
Approve selected student employee timesheets and comply with campus/department student employee and payroll policies.
Provide regular performance feedback and opportunities for ongoing professional development - will require some evening and weekend commitments to ensure quality control.
Assessment/Administrative Related Duties
Work in accordance with Associate Director, Programs & Assessment and Assistant Director, Fitness on overseeing program related assessment related to departmental learning outcomes and divisional goals.
Provide annual assessment data collection and reports to support departmental assessment plan.
Provide information annually and as needed to support departmental annual report and divisional monthly success logs.
Update monthly usage statistics for all fitness related programs and report appropriately on departmental log.
Prepare a programmatic annual report complete with user data, student evaluations and interviews, and university collaboration efforts.
Supervise campus recreation facilities and staff on designated evenings and weekends, as assigned.
Serve on university committees, as assigned.
Represent the Department at various campus, division, and community functions, as assigned.
Assist the Assistant Director - Fitness in evaluation and formulation of policies, procedures, and long-range plans.
Periodically assess the needs and interests of the Towson University community in regard to new programs or modifications of existing program structure.
Contribute to the accomplishment of Department goals and initiatives, as assigned.
Facility Management
Work in accordance with Coordinator, Reservations and Events to schedule all fitness class programming in Burdick Hall.
Assist the Assistant Director - Fitness in facility related work including preventative maintenance responsibilities associated with the fitness studios.
Fiscal Management
Provide budgetary oversight for student and non-student payroll.
Manage monthly payroll procedures for all student and non-student staff positions including timesheet approval, pay period budget logs, and monthly reporting.
Assist the Assistant Director, Fitness in managing programmatic fee collection and revenue generation for group fitness and instructional fitness programs.
Required:
Bachelor's degree
One year of professional work experience within fitness and/or recreation.
Primary group fitness certification from an accredited, national association (AFAA, ACE, ACSM, NASM, NETA).
Demonstrated ability to teach and conduct fitness classes and instructor trainings for at least three formats such as dance, cycling, rhythmic aerobics, strength training, yoga, TRX, Pilates, kickboxing and/or step.
Strong computer skills for the processing of facility, fiscal and personnel management.
Preferred:
Master’s degree in kinesiology, physical education, or closely related field from an accredited college or university;
CPR, AED and First Aid-Professional Rescue Instructor certified.
Experience working in a collegiate recreation environment.
Demonstrated supervisory experience in managing a diverse fitness program to include programming and staffing.
