Position Summary
The Director of Athletics and Recreation is a senior leadership role responsible for providing strategic direction, oversight, and management of all aspects of the Athletics and Recreation (A&R) department at Centennial College. As part of an integrated student affairs leadership team, and reporting directly to the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students, the Director plays a pivotal role in collaboratively shaping the student experience, enhancing students’ sense of community and belonging, and fostering a culture of health and wellness through sport, fitness, recreation and related co-curricular health and wellness programs at all five campuses within an integrated student services model.
The incumbent provides strategic, integrated, student-focused, and innovative leadership; enhances and ensures the efficient operation of programs, services, and facilities; and acts to meet students’ diverse physical, social, recreational, and educational needs. They lead with vision, continuously seeking opportunities for growth and improvement with/for students for matters related to their portfolio.
Responsibilities
Leadership and strategic planning for Athletics & Recreation
Establishes strategic direction and visionary leadership for the department, including toward key contributions to student health and well-being, retention, learning and development, leadership, employment, and graduation.
Influences College and departmental decisions by researching and understanding trends and best practices in sport and recreation recruitment, retention, and participation; managing and leading cutting-edge venues and facilities; and achieving sport excellence.
Supervises and mentors reporting staff to ensure their professional growth and development, including conducting regular performance evaluations, providing feedback, and addressing any performance-related issues in a timely manner.
Fosters a positive and inclusive team culture that promotes collaboration, employee engagement, continuous learning and development, and participation in relevant training and workshops.
Champions and seeks opportunities to sponsor diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the A&R department to create an environment that is welcoming and accessible to students from all backgrounds.
Student-Centered Business Development and Relationship Management
Builds, develops, and nurtures strategic internal and external relationships – in collaboration with various stakeholders at all levels – to enhance opportunities for revenue generation, athlete recruitment, and program development in support of enhancing the student experience.
Directs administration and operation of athletic facilities at all campuses, prioritizing student and staff use.
Fosters partnerships with local schools, youth sports organizations, and community groups to promote A&R programs and strengthen ties with the broader community.
Directs the development, implementation, and evaluation of athletic and campus recreation programs that promote the holistic development and engagement of a diverse student body and are inclusive and accessible to students of all identities and abilities.
Intercollegiate Athletics
Provides strategic leadership, direction, and guidance to the Manager, A&R managing varsity programs, and remains connected and present to support operations, athletes, and the community.
Facilitates and approves the development of robust and strategic relationships with provincial and national sports associations, community groups, and corporate partners to benefit students and the College’s profile in collegiate sports.
Directs the long-term and strategic administration of the Therapy Clinic operations to ensure quality medical support for all varsity participants, as well as continued excellence in service.
Guides leadership, employees, coaches, and athletes in creating an equitable and inclusive sports and recreation culture.
Ensures compliance with all relevant policies and regulations set forth by athletic and legal governing bodies.
Facilities Management
Provides strategic leadership, direction, and guidance to the Manager overseeing facilities, and remains connected and present to support its ongoing operations and enhancement.
Monitors maintenance reserve fund and seeks sponsorships.
Financial and Operational Effectiveness
Directs department business planning, project management, and team goal-setting and metrics that deliver on the strategic goals, with support from the Manager, A&R.
Develops the annual budgets and plans for A&R, optimizing resource allocation to achieve program goals, with support from the Manager, A&R.
Qualifications/Experience
4-year degree, or equivalent.
Degree in Sports Administration, Education Administration, Business Administration, Management, or another related field.
Three-year diploma/degree with relevant professional certification (ex. NCCP Coaching Certification Level 1) is considered equivalent.
NCCP Coaching Certification Level 1 alongside a 4-year degree is considered an asset.
Master's degree in a relevant field is a strong asset.
The job experience requirements for this position can be summarized as follows:
Nine (9) years of progressive experience in athletic administration, ideally within a collegiate or university environment.
Proven track record of leadership and management, encompassing staff supervision, budget management, and sports program and facility oversight.
Strong knowledge of postsecondary student success, educational structure, and collegiate-level sports and recreation administration.
High-level independent judgment and critical decision-making ability at a leadership level.
Experience in budget development, fiscal management, fundraising, and resource allocation.
Knowledge of facility operations, maintenance, scheduling, and safety protocols.
Successful track record in developing and implementing athletic and recreation programs, including intercollegiate sports, intramurals, fitness, and wellness initiatives.
Experience in building strategic partnerships with local communities, businesses, and external organizations to support initiatives and generate revenue.
