NC State University is seeking an energetic, innovative, student-centered leader for the position of Coordinator, Sports Programs. We seek an individual with proven leadership experience capable of working as part of a fast-paced, results-oriented team. The candidate will empower student staff to create world-class wellness and recreation programs that promote and enhance student success inside and outside of the classroom. This position reports to the Assistant Director, Sports Programs.
The Coordinator, Sports Programs will provide leadership and manage the NC State Wellness and Recreation Club Sports, Intramural Sports and sport-related reservations. This position provides significant teaching and training of students and oversees risk management, scheduling, and budgeting for the programs. Independently makes decisions and exceptions about standard operating procedures and guidelines — including managing club allocation process, participant eligibility, sport rules, and ejection procedures. The candidate will ensure all programs operate within required risk management procedures and will oversee the implementation of safety standards.
Specific Responsibilities include:
Provides leadership and directs the Intramural Sports Programming (e.g. flag football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, badminton, etc.), which has over 6,000 unique participants and over 45,000 contact hours annually. Independently manage day-to-day operations, including staffing, scheduling leagues, tournaments and special events, registration, equipment maintenance and replacement, and inventory control.
Develop, implement, and update standard operating procedures and guidelines. Work directly with the University Risk Manager to ensure proper university and department risk management procedures are followed for Intramural Sports programming.
Responsible for all aspects of supervision (hiring, disciplining, terminating, performance evaluations) of more than 150 student program assistants, supervisors, evaluators, officials and scorekeepers. Facilitate training, mentoring, and continuing education opportunities for staff. Responsible for managing time cards and bi-weekly payroll for respective student staff.
Provides leadership and advises the Club Sports Program, which includes more than 1,800 unique participants and 110,000 contact hours annually. Independently manage day-to-day operations. Work directly with the University Risk Manager to ensure proper university and department risk management procedures are followed for Club Sports.
Independently makes decisions and exceptions about standard operating procedures and guidelines.
Responsible for an operating budget of $240k annually. Responsible for managing Club Sports allocation process and a sustainable fee structure.
Serve as department liaison to a select number of Club Sports organizations. Advise and mentor Club Sports Council members, respective club officers, and club members.
Develop and instruct the Club Officer Leadership Training and Development program. Specific topics include: risk management, travel guidelines, event planning, purchasing policies and guidelines, facility scheduling, recruitment, and documentation requirements.
Provides consultation and expert advice on best practices, industry trends and emerging issues to Assistant Director, Sports Programs and Wellness and Recreation leadership.
Resolve conflicts and grievances within the area of responsibility. Develop and execute an ongoing customer service training program to ensure goals, objectives and outcomes are met.
Plan and assess short and long-term business objectives and goals for Intramural Sports program and Club Sports program to determine satisfaction levels, areas of improvement and potential sectors to target among staff and participants.
Manage sports-related external reservations and events for Wellness and Recreation. Responsible for event coordination, staff training, equipment rental and scheduling.
Oversee the painting of outdoor fields utilizing a painting robot.
Assist with the development and execution of marketing strategies for Sports Programs, services and special events.
Support the execution of special events, certification workshops and conferences.
Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in recreation, sports management, higher education administration or a related field. If in progress; must be completed by the date of hire.
At least two years of experience with intramural sports and/or club sports program planning and implementation in a collegiate recreation environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in recreation, sports management, higher education administration or a related field.
Two or more years of experience with intramural sports and/or club sports program planning and implementation in a collegiate recreation environment. This may include a graduate assistantship or two years of professional internship.
