Job Description

Arizona State University is seeking an Associate Director of Residential Life, who will share in the leadership and management of a comprehensive residential program serving more than 16,500 students across four locations in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The Associate Director builds upon ASU’s success in delivering an exceptional experience that contributes to the intellectual, personal, and professional growth and development of students living within the residential college program and continuing student living communities.

The Associate Director serves on the Residential Life Senior Leadership Team and maintains significant interactions with a broad array of institutional stakeholders including students, parents, faculty, alumni, and community members. The position requires a thoughtful and highly collaborative leader with strong supervision skills; the ability to develop and evaluate strategies for the management of critical incidents and leads the implementation and support for Housing and University wide initiatives. This position reports to the Assistant Vice President and Director of Residential Life. The Associate Director will work closely with Education Outreach and Student Services Partners, in addition to ASU’s Academic Colleges.

Salary Range

$78,000 - $82,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties

• Provide direction and supervision to facilitate and develop the residential living experience consistent with established vision, mission, goals, and objectives of ASU, Educational Outreach and Student Services and University Housing.
• Assist with the management and supervision of the daily administrative operations of assigned residential communities consisting of Area Directors, Community Directors, Sr. Catalysts, Community Assistants, Catalysts and Desk Assistants, to ensure adherence with established guidelines, policies, standards and requirements.
• Participate in strategic planning efforts, vision and longer-term planning, supervision and empowerment of staff.
• Serve as point of contact for University Housing at assigned campus location(s) addressing various stakeholders to ensure timely communication and follow up.
• Lead and support organizational development and change management initiatives.
• Assist with crisis response action plan within residential communities; work closely and collaboratively with appropriate University agencies to ensure optimum safety of all.
• Act as University Housing Leadership, to ensure proper coordination of services and activities for crisis management.
• Plan, develop, implement and oversee residential environment to ensure provision of an academically and socially stimulating community serving the needs of a broad student population.
• Develop, interpret and administer goals, objectives, policies and procedures to anticipate and meet residents’ changing needs within the parameters of the community.
• Work collaboratively and in conjunction with third party partnerships, where appropriate, to ensure the needs of students and the University are understood and properly met.
• Work collaboratively with facilities/maintenance/custodial staff, information technology and other university entities to ensure timely delivery of required services.
• Work collaboratively with the University Housing Leadership to develop action plans and associated programs to meet the stated strategic goals and objectives of ASU, EOSS and University Housing.
• Manage risk within the residence hall communities and/or apartment communities by resolving problems/issues; recommend measures to mitigate liability and risk exposure.
• Serve as Student Conduct adjudicator as needed to support maintaining a safe and conducive environment for student success within the residential community.
• Recruit, hire, supervise, train and evaluate all residence hall and/or apartment housing staff to ensure ongoing understanding, support and awareness of standards, practices and expectations as well as all applicable governing statutes, regulations and requirements.
• Provide professional development and leadership workshops/training programs to targeted groups.
• Prepare and present a variety of monthly reports and statistics; monitor budget to ensure adherence within established guidelines and requirements for expenditures and manage operating and personnel budgets for areas of responsibility.
• Provide support and collaborate with academic partners to implement academically thriving communities to include but not limited to Residential Colleges and Continuing Student Communities.
• Work to implement/integrate Residential Colleges, First Year Residential Experience, and Continuing Student experience.
• Implement student retention initiatives and assist with Housing renewal efforts.
• Serve on university committees, as assigned.
• Establish, build and maintain collaborative partnerships with Dean of Students Offices, Student/Services Offices and other university entities.
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND seven (7) years of related administrative experience, which includes four (4) years of supervisory experience; OR, Eleven (11) years of related administrative experience, which includes four (4) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

• Master's degree in higher education, Counseling, Business Administration, or closely related field, with at least five (5) years previous Residential Life/ Student Affairs experience, four (4) of which include supervision
• Demonstrated knowledge of student housing practices, student leadership and student disciplinary processes to facilitate efficient residential hall management and supervision. 
• Demonstrated knowledge of the principles, practices and standards of Student Affairs and University Housing.
• Demonstrated knowledge of principles, practices, methods and standards of management and fiscal operations.
• Demonstrated knowledge of counseling, conflict management and crisis intervention theories, principles and practices.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of strategic planning.
• Experience in working with diverse student populations.
• Experience in problem solving and critical thinking for decision making.
• Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience in planning, analyzing and coordinating activities and establishing priorities.
• Experience in the use of computer-based technology in performing work activities.
• Experience in interpreting, analyzing and preparing budgetary and forecasting reports.
• Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with diverse populations.
• Experience in applying strong crisis management skills to de-escalate potentially volatile situations.
