The Fitness Coordinator of Group Fitness reports to the Assistant Director of Fitness and Aquatics and assists in the oversite, assessment and coordination of an innovative and growing collegiate fitness program that includes personal training, small group training, 26,000-square-feet of fitness center spaces, three group fitness studios, student staff supervision and special events. The Fitness Coordinator of Group Fitness will oversee Group Fitness, Custom Special Events, and Small Group Training programs and the management of fitness studios.
Detailed Job Description
Leadership and Management:
Utilize industry best-practices to oversee the group fitness program, custom special events, and small group training.
Manage day-to-day operations, including scheduling classes and instructors, managing fitness studios, and maintaining equipment inventory.
Supervise Fitness Instructors, Program Assistants, and Small Group Trainers, including recruiting, hiring, mentoring, and performance evaluations.
Develop and lead trainings on standard operating procedures, guidelines, and departmental emergency action plans.
Instruction and Training:
Provide skill sessions for Group Fitness Instructors in support of instructor development. Specific class formats include strength-training, aquatic fitness, mind-body, cardiovascular training, and dance.
Instruct a nationally accredited Group Fitness Instructor Certification Course.
Facilitate training, risk management assessments, mentorship, and continuing education opportunities for Fitness Student staff.
Customer Service and Communication:
Resolve conflicts and grievances within areas of responsibility.
Manage communication plans for programming schedules and assist with marketing strategies for fitness programs and special events.
Maintain a consistently friendly, clean, and safe environment for staff and patrons.
Program Development and Assessment:
Assist with planning and assessing short and long-term objectives and goals for the Group Fitness and Small Group Training programs. Topics include satisfaction levels, areas of improvement, and identifying growth opportunities related to participants and programs.
Create experiential fitness related opportunities through custom special events for the UNCW Campus community.
Assist in the development and execution of well-being initiatives and programs.
Administrative Duties:
Manage schedules and monthly payroll for student staff.
Provide feedback for managing a sustainable fee structure and assist with the development and administration of the fitness program budget including personnel, equipment replacement, and program implementation costs.
Consultation and Expert Advice:
Provide consultation and expert advice on best practices, industry trends, and emerging issues.
Other Duties:
Support university programs outside of Campus Recreation through collaboration, outreach, and mentorship.
All other duties as assigned that align with the department’s mission and vision.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
One year of fitness programming experience.
Experience in teaching multiple group fitness formats.
Staff supervision experience.
Additional training and Experience Preferred
Master’s Degree in Recreation, Physical Education, Exercise Science/Physiology, or related field
Graduate Assistant experience in collegiate recreation programming
2 years of direct experience with:
Student personnel supervision at the collegiate recreation level
Implementation and management of group fitness programs and small group training
Management and supervision of all related fitness equipment and spaces
Leading a variety of group fitness class formats
Nationally Accredited Certification in Group Fitness Instruction
Facilitation experience – including but not limited to teaching instructional courses, leading in-services, etc.
Experience personal training
Certification or Licensure Required: (or can become obtained after hire):
Nationally Accredited Certification in Group Fitness Instruction
American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor or Instructor Trainer Certification
American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Adult, Infant, and Child certification.
