University Recreation (UREC) is an integral part of the Health & Wellbeing Unit within Student Affairs. UREC includes facilities, programs, and services designed to empower members of the UNC Charlotte community, with a particular focus on students, to be physically active and develop lifelong health and wellbeing behaviors. The department includes two indoor recreation centers, two field complexes, an outdoor fitness park, sport programs, and fitness programs. UREC also provides an exceptional employment experience to more than 250 students that intentionally seeks to develop essential career readiness skills.
The Assistant Director of Facility Operations is an essential member of the UREC team, providing management of daily operations for University Recreation facilities including the University Recreation Center and Calisthenic Outdoor Recreation Equipment (CORE), along with direct supervision of the Coordinator of Facility Operations.
Facility Management (50%)
Manage daily operations of University Recreation facilities, including the University Recreation Center and CORE outdoor fitness space
Manage fitness spaces and associated equipment, including the development and implementation of the fitness equipment replacement plan
Coordinate building access for the University Recreation Center
Assist in coordination of policies, procedures, payments, and maintenance of memberships and daily passes
Ensure all facilities operate within required risk management procedures and oversee the implementation of standardized safety practices
Collaborate with the Outreach & Engagement team to develop and execute strategic marketing initiatives, ensuring increased visibility of UREC facilities
Maintain facility operations pages on the UREC website
Review daily reports and respond/delegate any necessary action as appropriate
Maintain accurate usage data and regularly assess facility operations to ensure effectiveness, efficiency, and compliance with university, state, and national standards and best practices
Assist in the development, oversight, and analysis of budgets, including expenditures, fees, and other revenue
Supervision (30%)
Supervise the Coordinator of Facility Operations
Meet one-on-one weekly with the coordinator
Supervise student employees, including Building Managers and Exceptional Children Services students
Provide support, guidance, and indirect supervision of student employees supervised by the Coordinator of Facility Operations
Facilitate student employee trainings and meetings that ensure job responsibilities are able to met, as well as the development of leadership and other career readiness skills
Department Leadership and Administration (10%)
Actively participate as a member of the UREC professional staff team, including professional staff team meetings and assigned department committees
Ensure that the UREC mission is achieved and values are upheld
Contribute to the development and implementation of department strategic plans and annual goals/priorities
Advocate for UREC and foster campus and community partnerships to advance physical activity and holistic wellbeing
General Administration (10%)
Attend and actively participate in all mandatory Health & Wellbeing Unit, Student Affairs, and UNC Charlotte meetings and trainings
Serve on Health & Wellbeing Unit, Student Affairs, and UNC Charlotte committees and working groups as assigned
Actively participate in NIRSA and/or other relevant professional associations
Other duties as assigned by the Associate Director of Operations
Bachelor’s degree in recreation, sport management, kinesiology, or a related field
2 years of experience operating recreation, fitness, and/or athletics facilities
Experience supervising part-time or full-time staff
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Master’s degree in Exercise Science or Kinesiology or related field
Certified Instructor for First Aid, CPR, AED, and Blood Borne Pathogen training
Recognized experience at the collegiate level in administration and supervision of fitness programs and facilities
Two years of experience managing strength and condition spaces in a collegiate recreation environment
Knowledge and experience in budget planning and fiscal management
An understanding of student development theory and demonstrated success in implementing recreational training and conditioning programs to a culturally diverse population
Ability to thrive in an environment that values high expectations, accountability, and dedication to risk management
Experience with management and personnel software such as, but not limited to Do Sport Easy (DSE), Shift Planner, Blackboard, and Connect-2
