Recreational Sports is a critical part of supporting student well-being and is a primary entry point at Indiana University Bloomington for supporting students in their health and wellness. Our mission is to connect, inform, and inspire people to lead an active, healthy lifestyle. We serve over 36,000 students, faculty, staff, and public participants annually. Our team consists of 46 appointed staff members, and over 800 part-time student staff members. JOB SUMMARY
The Assistant Director of Intramural Sports at Indiana University's Campus Recreational Sports supervises all aspects of the Intramural Sports program for the students, faculty, and staff of Indiana University Bloomington. This position includes the supervision and direction of 2 Coordinators, 3 Program Assistants, and 175 season employees for programs at Bill Garrett Fieldhouse (BGF), Student Recreational Sports Center (SRSC), Woodlawn Fields, University Gym (UGym), Sembower Recreational Sports Field Complex (SRSFC), and off-campus.
Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and evaluate staff; manage schedules and payroll, facilitate meetings, and implement staff recognition initiatives.
Facilitate recruitment and professional growth opportunities.
Develop and lead training sessions on skill enhancement, team building, and operational efficiency; provide mentorship to foster a positive work environment.
Conduct evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and implement recognition programs to motivate and support staff.
Offer resources such as resume workshops and job search strategies.
Coordinate and oversee facility reservations for Intramural Sports.
Manage disciplinary incidents, in coordination with human resources, related to Intramural Sports, ensuring compliance with Recreational Sports and University policies and related appeals.
Oversee equipment inventory, ensuring security, maintenance, and adherence to university purchasing guidelines through research and planning.
Utilize assessment results to inform future programming, recommend new initiatives, and support policy development.
Advise the Intramural Sports Council.
Collaborate across departments within Recreational Sports - including Outreach, Information Systems and Analytics, Operations, Financial Affairs, Member Services, Programming, Student Personnel, and Research - to achieve priority goals.
Contribute to annual planning, goal setting, and reporting to document achievements, identify needs, and shape ongoing initiatives.
Support department-wide events and participate in professional staff rotations, including night, weekend, and break coverage.
Assist in event planning, logistics, and equipment preparation.
Ensure safety protocols, maintain certifications, respond to emergencies, and assist in staff training.
Assist with supply receiving, inventory management, and space renovations.
Support the Optimum Equipment Care Plan and maintenance planning.
Assist with oversight of the Outdoor/Auxiliary Facility and Bill Garrett Fieldhouse.
Maintain communication, prepare reports, and monitor staff performance.
Assist with budget monitoring and operational documentation.
Promote exceptional service through staff training and ongoing support.
General Responsibilities
Provide day-to-day operational management of recreational programming staff.
Establish short-term operational objectives.
Identify operational issues and/or areas of improvement and implements solutions to improve processes and/or operational efficiency.
Analyze, monitor, and evaluate performance of assigned staff; establish work priorities, conduct performance reviews, and provide corrective action as needed.
Ensure adequate staffing and effective scheduling; participate and inform employment decisions for assigned staff.
Provide direct supervision and oversight of assigned staff and activities; impact, and is held accountable for, the performance of team and/or assigned staff.
Ensure and provides training to assigned staff to improve user support operations; research and identify development opportunities for assigned staff.
Keep next-level leader(s) informed of trends as well as significant problems.
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.
EDUCATION
Required
Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Recreation, Sports Management, or a related field
Preferred
Master's degree in Exercise Science, Recreation, Sports Management, or a related field
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
2 years of related experience with structured recreational programming
Preferred
Experience supervising full-time staff members
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required
CPR/AED within 180 days of hire
Standard First Aid within 180 days of hire
Preventing Disease Transmission/Universal Precautions within 180 days of hire
Preferred
High School Officiating license
