Inspire the next generation of students to live active, balanced lives as our Assistant Director for Physical Education, teaching classes while leading our dynamic curriculum across martial arts, team sports, and more! Join our collaborative, energetic team overseeing 25 unique courses and mentoring dedicated faculty in a positive environment committed to inclusivity and accessibility.
The Assistant Director for Physical Education provides instruction and strategic leadership for developing, instructing, and operations of credit-bearing classes. This position teaches 5-7 physical education classes per term. The Assistant Director oversees curriculum management and faculty supervision for approximately 25 unique course titles and oversight of ~40 classes per term; in the areas of: Individual Activities, Martial Arts, Racquet Sports, Running, and Team Sports.
The Assistant Director for Physical Education makes decisions on curriculum development, course policies and delivery, hiring and mentoring practices, work priorities and assignments, and budgetary needs and reviews. This position is responsible for mentoring and evaluating, on average, 14 pro tem and career instructional faculty, and hiring additional instructors as needed.
The Assistant Director for Physical Education reports to the Associate Director of Physical Education and is a member of the PE Team.
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education or related field. • Two (2) years of full-time responsibility in an environment reflecting experience in instruction in physical education or related courses. • Two (2) years of full-time administrative experience in a professional setting. • Evidence of experience, expertise and/or certification in at least one of the following areas: Individual Activities, Martial Arts, Racquet Sports, Running, and Team Sports. • Two (2) years of experience hiring and supervising staff or faculty. • CPR/AED and First Aid Certification or the ability to obtain within 3 months of employment.
Professional Competencies
• Effective communication skills. • Proficiency with software applications for email, word processing, scheduling, curriculum management and reporting. • Demonstrated experience with and/or commitment to working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, in support of an inclusive and welcoming environment. • Understanding of current issues and best practices in physical education.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree in physical education, teaching, recreation administration or related field. In exceptional circumstances, significant professional experience may substitute for an advanced degree. • Evidence of leadership experience and/or a commitment to student learning and development. • Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum development. • Demonstrated experience of budget management. • Demonstrated experience in implementing safety and risk management strategies.
