Position Summary: The Graduate Assistant for Sport Programs will assist in the professional supervision of the Intramural Sports and Sport Club programs at The University of Alabama. An integral part of University Recreation, Sports Programs provides opportunities that foster health and well-being, learning, leadership, and inclusion for UA students and campus community.
Duties will include managing a comprehensive intramural sports program, assisting in scheduling of student staff, and serving as a liaison for multiple sport clubs. This position is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating competitive sports programming in collaboration with Staff Coordinators, and at the direction of the Assistant Director for Sport Programs and Director for Recreation Programs. The Assistant Director will determine an appropriate work schedule to ensure proper coverage of all events, which includes evening games and weekend activities.
Responsibilities:
Recruit, hire, train, evaluate, and develop approximately 75-100 part-time student staff.
Assist in creating training programs that provide progressive student staff development and continuing education for Supervisors and Program Assistants.
Manage Sport Club administrative materials, including: Intent-to-Travel Forms, Activity Reports, Club Incentive Program, and Reimbursement Requests.
Serve as a liaison for four to six Sport Clubs by providing leadership and mentoring to Sport Club officers and members.
Assist in creating officer-training programs that develop sound leadership, program knowledge, and skills to successfully operate Sport Clubs as student-led organizations.
Collaborate with other University Recreation professionals for marketing, special events, facility reservations, assessment, and other initiatives.
Utilize computer-based scheduling software and web-based programs.
Continue professional development through membership in professional organizations, attending conferences and workshops, and staying current with trends, issues, and risk management pertinent to competitive sports-based activities.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution by June 2026.
Experience working in campus recreation specifically with intramural sports, sport clubs, and/or competitive sports programming.
Experience in officiating and extensive knowledge of sports rules.
Ability to work extended hours (nights and weekends) as needed. Weekly office hours and program coverage will be determined by program needs and supervisor.
Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.
Current Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certification, or ability to obtain within first 30 days of employment.
Assistantship employment will only be granted upon acceptance into the Graduate School at The University of Alabama, to an applicant starting a relevant degree program in August 2026. Compensation: The Sports Program Graduate Assistant position is a 2-year appointment, with each academic year beginning August 3 and continuing to May 1. Compensation includes tuition waivers for the fall and spring semesters for each year of the appointment. The Graduate Assistant will be paid $21.90 per hour for time worked during the academic year, not to exceed 20 hours per week. Summer employment is possible between assistantship years at an hourly rate of $12.00. The start date for this assistantship shall be no later than July 31, 2026.
