This is a professional position responsible for administering a comprehensive aquatics and safety program and outdoor recreation program within the Campus Recreation Department. Responsible for program creation and implementation; hiring, training, and supervising employees; and serving as a departmental liaison. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Associate Director of Campus Recreation (Facilities, Aquatics, Safety & Outdoor Pursuits). This position is directly responsible for Aquatics and Safety, and supervises the Coordinator of Outdoor Pursuits.
Essential Job Functions:
Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates assigned staff, including graduate and undergraduate student employees.
Creates and manages aquatics programming, including but not limited to learn to swim classes, aquatic fitness classes, and pool and courtyard events.
Teaches and participates in aquatics programs.
Creates and manages safety programming, including red shirt drills, first aid kits availability, and other tasks to aid in departmental safety and risk management efforts.
Markets to and coordinates with groups on usage of the pool and courtyard facility.
Coordinates with departmental staff on operational management and schedule of the pools.
Coordinates CPR, first aid, AED, and bloodborne pathogens classes for all departmental staff.
Coordinates a comprehensive emergency action plan collaboratively with all program areas.
Collaborates with staff to ensure safety training is provided during all departmental and area-specific training as needed.
Administers aquatics and safety budgets, purchases, equipment, and revenue.
Manages outdoor pursuits programming, including but not limited to challenge course group team-building programs, climbing wall management, outdoor trips programs, outdoor equipment rental and resource center, biking trails inspection and maintenance, and workshops and/or classes on outdoor-related topics.
Serves as liaison to other campus departments, external vendors and the community.
Three years of related experience is required. Experience in aquatics programming, risk management and safety programming, and/or outdoor recreation and education programming is required. CPR, First Aid, AED, and American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certifications are required within three months of employment. Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification is required within three months of employment.
Supervisory experience is preferred. Experience with group team-building programming is preferred. Experience in a higher education setting is preferred. CPO or AFO instructor, Lifeguard Instructor Trainer (LGIT), and/or Water Safety Instructor Trainer (WSIT) certifications are preferred.
