The University of Minnesota Recreation & Wellness (RecWell) department is part of the Office for Student Affairs, and its mission is to enrich the campus experience and encourage lifelong wellbeing. URW provides programs and facilities that support this mission. This position reports to the Director for Minneapolis Recreation and Wellness Facilities and supervises two full-time staff, the Intramural Sports and Inclusive Recreation Manager and the Facility Coordinator.
This position oversees the day-to-day operations of all Minneapolis Recreation and Wellness facilities including the 500,000 square foot Recreation and Wellness Center, Cooke hall, the University Field House, RecWell Sports Field Complex, and West Bank Fields. This position provides oversight and coordination of the Intramural Sports and Inclusive Recreation programs, Open Recreation, internal scheduling of Minneapolis facilities, management of two equipment rooms, carries out special events, and manages a variety of open recreation opportunities.
Annually, this position oversees a total operating budget of $890,000 between Intramurals and Mpls. Facilities with approximately $440,000 in revenue generated through intramural league fees, locker sales, and equipment rentals. Experience communicating with a diverse audience and demonstrated evidence of a commitment to promoting a culture that respects and advances diversity and inclusion is important. The typical hours are on-site Monday-Friday and occasional evening/weekend.
The salary for this position is $62,000 and the application deadline is Sunday, November 5.
Responsibilities:
Operations (45%)
Oversee the daily operations and manage the daily schedules of the following Minneapolis RecWell facilities: Recreation and Wellness Center, Cooke Hall, University Field House, RecWell Sports Complex (Dome), and the West Bank Fields
Determine the allocation of facility space by balancing Open Recreation needs with the requests of five RecWell program directors in addition to Intercollegiate Athletics (ICA) and the School of Kinesiology. This includes providing a sound rationale to help navigate the frustrations and political maneuvering that can arise when requests are not met due to limited space resources
Plan, manage and evaluate all aspects of the Open Recreation program and assess the use of Minneapolis facilities for open recreation and general participation
Senior-level department contributor for Mazevo facility scheduling software and for facilities use of Fusion recreation management software
Assist the Director of Facility Operations with the maintenance program and projects
Provide direction and development opportunities for staff related to facility and risk management
Provide input to the Director of Minneapolis Facilities regarding the facilities operations budget and long-range planning
Coordinate with University departments including, but not limited to, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, and the School of Kinesiology to create cooperative scheduling procedures and accommodations
Assist in development of facility policies and revenue generating enterprises
Intramural and Adaptive Sport Management (30%)
Direct, advise, and develop short and long-term strategies for approximately 50 intramural sports leagues, tournaments, clinics, and special events for over 8,500 students
Develop, implement, enforce, and monitor adherence to operating policies, procedures, and standards for intramural sports leagues and events
Assess the performance and create annual reports for intramural sports program
Responsible for overseeing approximately $230,000 in annual revenue generated through intramural league fees and manage the total operating budget of $500,000
Develop adaptive programming with the Intramural program, utilizing campus and local resources
Manage the performance and nurture the development of the Intramural Sports and Inclusive Recreation Manager, setting and advising performance goals while checking progress, coaching, and motivating to meet goals and expectations
Collaborate with University and community partners such as the Disability Resource Center, Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute, and Special Olympics to develop adaptive and inclusive recreation programs
Equipment Room and Pro Shop Management (25%)
Provide direction and oversight for daily operations of two equipment rooms, four locker rooms (approximately 6,000 lockers) within the Recreation & Wellness Center
Provide vision for the Pro Shop in the Recreation and Wellness Center including oversight, purchasing of inventory and general management
Budget oversight for operating budget of $390,000 with approximately $210,000 in annual revenue generated through locker sales, and equipment rentals
Manage the performance and nurture the development of the Facility Coordinator, setting and advising performance goals while checking progress, coaching, and motivating to meet goals and expectations
Indirectly supervise approximately 25-30 student Equipment Room Attendants who report to the Facility Coordinator and 125 student intramural staff who report to the Intramural Sports and Inclusive Recreation Manager
Assist and oversee the Facility Coordinator in collecting and reconciling daily cash deposits from equipment room rentals and pro shop sales while ensuring compliance of all financial activity to University regulations
Collaborate with the Director of Membership Outreach and RecWell finance team on Fusion software and point of sale activity
Required Qualifications:
BA/BS with at least five (5) years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal nine (9) years
Experience with Intramurals and/or sport league programming
Budgeting experience
Preferred Qualifications:
BA/BS degree in a field related to sport, recreation, or hospitality management
3-5 years of facility management experience
Experience with Adaptive Recreation
Experience communicating with a diverse audience and a commitment to promoting a culture that respects and advances diversity and inclusion
Supervisory experience (part time staff acceptable)
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong organization skills and attention to detail
Strong customer service skills
