The Aquatic Specialist assumes functional and administrative responsibility of all aquatic lifeguard staff in the Mizzou Aquatic Center, which includes a 50M competitive pool, diving well, two whirlpools, indoor and outdoor leisure pools and a steam and sauna rooms. This position manages aquatic lifeguard staff including the hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of these staff; additionally, assisting in providing professional supervision of facility operations; instructing American Red Cross courses and communicating custodial and maintenance needs. This position will assist in the supervision of aquatic special events and competitions as needed. This individual will have responsibility for direct management of one or more aspects of the department’s mission, critical to facility operation and services.
Responsible for managing all aspects of the lifeguard student staff (approx. 40-60). This includes, but is not limited to recruitment, selection, orientation, scheduling, in-service training, payroll, and evaluation.
Assist in instructing American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR & AED coursed and recertification courses.
Assist with daily maintenance of the Mizzou Aquatic Center in a support role. This includes but is not limited to water chemistry, air quality, equipment maintenance, troubleshooting and inventory management.
Assist with the implementation of large aquatic special events and completion to include; staff supervision, set-up and tear-down, event problem solving that are held in the Mizzou Aquatic Center.
Assist, as needed, with all required departmental special events.
As with all positions, involvement with other duties and responsibilities is expected in order to serve the customer and maintain our MizzouRec mission.
Serve on campus committees and task force as needed to represent the MizzouRec.
This position is supervised by the Aquatics Assistant Director with additional assistance from the Aquatic Coordinator for Programs.
This position supervises student staff directly performing lifeguarding duties.
$13.27/hr. - $18.27/hr. on a biweekly basis

This position may require evening and weekend hours supporting activities and programs within the department. Occasionally division and campus projects may require additional hours outside of your normal schedule.
A high school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities can be acquired is necessary.
A Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, Sports Management, or related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
One to two years’ experience working within campus recreation or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
One to two years experience working in an Aquatic Center with experience managing lifeguard and/or other student staff.
Current American Red Cross Lifeguard/CPR/AED/FA certification or ability to obtain within the first six months of employment.
American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification or ability to obtain within the first six months of employment.
American Red Cross WSI preferred.
Certified Pool & Spa Operator License preferred.
