Reporting to the Assistant Director of Outdoor Recreation & Education, the Programming Coordinator will serve as a leader within the department’s outdoor recreation and education team – Outdoor Adventures. Outdoor Adventures is responsible for oversight of the indoor climbing and bouldering walls; equipment rental center; adventure trips and workshops; team development programs; and Piney Lake informal recreation and events. The Outdoor Adventures team consists of one full-time Assistant Director, two full-time Coordinators, and two part-time Graduate Assistants. This coordinator position is responsible for developing high-impact outdoor recreation experiences for the UNCG community. This position directly supervises 30+ student employees.
In addition, the Outdoor Adventures team is responsible for developing and implementing a shared vision guided by departmental goals that are aligned with the Division of Student Affairs’ strategic plan. Outdoor Adventures plays a key role with leveraging specific strategies around health and wellbeing as well as student learning and success. Outdoor recreation and education programming are critical to RecWell’s ability to further promote social, physical, environmental, and career dimensions of well-being for the UNCG community. This position is uniquely positioned to contribute to student learning and student success by providing space for UNCG students to build community through welcoming and inclusive outdoor recreation opportunities.

Key Responsibilities
General Administration (35%)
- Manage all aspects of programming and events for the Outdoor Adventures program, which consists of single and multi-day adventure trips and large scale outdoor recreation events.
- Coordinate hiring, training, scheduling, evaluation, and supervision of one part-time graduate assistant, multiple program assistants, and 30+ student staff.
- Assist with the development, implementation, and assessment of policies and procedures for all areas of responsibility.
- Provide continued education sessions for trip leaders on topics related to safety, risk management, and wilderness medicine.
- Assist with budget planning, reporting, and procurement processes as assigned.
- Assist with regular assessment of program offerings by developing, analyzing, and reporting findings as it relates to participation data and student learning outcomes.
- Co-instruct CTR 203: Fundamentals of Outdoor Leadership course once per academic year.
- Manage a variety of technology platforms which includes access management software, program registrations, payroll and timekeeping, rental operations, and point-of-sale transactions.
- Assist the program leadership team with the development and implementation of a comprehensive marketing plan to promote all offerings through a variety of marketing media.
- Ensure continuity in departmental and university business practices including managing student employee certifications and training records, compliance with FERPA and HIPAA regulations, and adherence to all Environmental Health and Safety standard operating procedures set forth by the department and/or university.
Programming (40%)
- Design and implement intentional outdoor recreation programming for students which focus on student belongingness, well-being, and community engagement.
- Develop a schedule of adventure trips and events each semester that provides access to outdoor recreation activities to the UNCG community.
- Develop summer programming opportunities based on current needs.
- Develop collaborative events and programming with campus partners.
- Manage program and event registrations and sales through Innosoft Fusion.
Facility, Equipment, and Risk Management (20%)
- Assist with maintaining a comprehensive risk management plan for all areas of responsibility. This includes detailed emergency action plans, safety protocols, and policies for all outdoor activities.
- Manage the program’s vehicle and trailer fleet, including maintenance, reservations, scheduling, and training.
- Provide routine evaluation and assessment of risk management practices.
- Assist with procurement of program equipment and evaluation of equipment needs.
- Conduct regular inventory and preventative maintenance of equipment
Additional (5%)
- Provide occasional support to other areas within the Outdoor Adventures program.
- Serve on departmental and university committees and work teams.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- Minimum of one year of full-time work experience in the outdoor recreation field; two years of a Graduate Assistantship counts as one year of experience.
- Previous supervisory experience (part-time and/or student employees).
- Direct experience with risk management of outdoor recreation programs.
- Demonstrated experience designing and leading single and multi-day adventure trips in several of the following outdoor recreation activities: rock climbing, caving, backpacking, hiking, sea kayaking, flatwater kayaking, whitewater kayaking, whitewater rafting, stand-up-paddle boarding, surfing, biking, and skiing/snowboarding.
- Current American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers certification (or ability to obtain within first 30-days of employment).
- Current Wilderness First Responder Certification.
- Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree.
- Experience designing and implementing outdoor recreation special event programming.
- Instructor certifications from one or more of the following organizations: Leave No Trace (LNT); American Canoe Association (ACA); Professional Climbing Instructors’ Association (PCIA); American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) Single Pitch Instructor.
- Experience with Innosoft Fusion recreation management software.
- Ability to work in a team-oriented environment that is focused on delivering high-impact experiences.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Direct budget management experience.
- Marketing, promotions, and communications experience.
