This is a full-time Civil Service Program Coordinator position appointed on a [12]-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
Primary Position Function/Summary:
Provides safe aquatics programs and opportunities for students, faculty, staff and the community that appeal to a wide variety of constituents following state, national and industry standards. Responsible for supervising a staff consisting of student coordinators, head lifeguards, head swim instructors, lifeguards, and swim instructors. University of Illinois Campus Recreation holds programming and operations for three pools across two facilities. Activities and Recreation Center (ARC) features an indoor Olympic-sized competition pool and an outdoor 50M pool while Campus Recreation Center East (CRCE) houses an indoor leisure pool and spa. This position will provide direct coordination of aquatics programs, facility operations, and risk management practices at all listed aquatics facilities.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Aquatics Duties and Responsibilities (75%):
Supervise, recruit, hire, train, and evaluate all part-time aquatics staff (70+) including student coordinators, head lifeguards, head swim instructors, lifeguards, and swim instructors.
- Determine staffing needs and hire qualified candidates based upon certifications, experience, skills and ability to contribute to the diverse needs of the University of Illinois and Campus Recreation
- Organize and execute regular all staff in-service trainings and team lead trainings
- Oversee operations and programming schedules for all aquatics staff
- Evaluate personnel via random shift audits, semester evaluations and observations from professional and leadership staff to ensure accountability standards are met
- Collaborate with Assistant Director of Aquatics and Risk Management to create, implement and routinely update all aquatic emergency action plans, employee manuals and standard operating procedures to operate under the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program
- Prioritize tasks and assign/delegate duties to employees in all pre- and post- preparation associated with operations and events
- Promote student development, teamwork, staff morale and mentorship opportunities across all aquatics staffing levels
- Coordinate programming and scheduling of daily offerings, Learn-to-Swim program, varsity swimming and diving, Aquatic Sport Clubs, Kinesiology classes, SCUBA, group fitness offerings, lifeguard certification courses, and other aquatic events through daily communication, Innosoft Fusion, Connect2Concepts and Accruent EMS software programs
- Assist program with compliance to state codes and national standards including Illinois Department of Public Health bathing codes, Pool and Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA) guidelines for operating pools, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) with guidelines regarding accessibility of recreation and pool facilities
- Provide oversight of approved programs to assess service delivery and staff performance to optimize users’ experience
- Collaborate internally and partner with campus units to ensure activities and services offered support a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment
- Manage payroll for all aquatics employees and collaborate with the Assistant Director of Aquatics and Risk Management and business office to review matters related to fees, vendors, resource allocation, budget and fiscal responsibilities relative to the aquatics program
- Assist in the promotion and publicizing of unit programs in conjunction with the Assistant Director of Marketing and program supervisors
- Compile information and data regarding pool usage, program attendance, Federal Work Study numbers, risk assessments, preventative maintenance, surveys and training evaluations to aid in programmatic decision-making and to form monthly, mid-year and annual reports
- Some evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required
Department Duties and Responsibilities (25%):
- Participate as a member of Campus Recreation professional staff in the development and implementation of policies and procedures
- Work cooperatively with other Campus Recreation program areas when needed, including the development of collaborative programming
- Serve on division, department, and/or university committees as assigned
- Design and implement special projects that support the overall mission of Campus Recreation
- Assist department with organization of staff development, recognition, and certification opportunities
Position Requirements and Qualifications:
Education:
Required: Bachelor’s degree.
Preferred: Master's degree.
Experience:
Required: One year of aquatics operations or programs experience. Demonstrated relevant supervisory experience.
Preferred: One year of supervisory experience.
Training, Licenses or Certifications:
Preferred: Certified lifeguard. Certified as a Lifeguarding Instructor(LGI). Certified as Water Safety Instructor (WSI).
