The Assistant Director of Esports will serve as the advisor and head coach for the UNCG Esports Club in addition to managing the daily operations of the brand new 3,300 square-foot UNCG Esports Arena. The Assistant Director will develop and implement all student activity and programming related to the space. The position will also support broader esports initiatives at UNCG, in collaboration with the university’s Esports Executive Committee. This position will work with part-time coaches, students, and campus partners to develop a healthy community of gamers and to reinforce our values of equity and inclusion in the gaming community. This position is responsible for directly supervising a part-time graduate assistant, part-time coaches, and 20+ student employees who manage the day-to-day supervision of the Esports Arena. In addition, this position will support the technology needs for the Department of Recreation and Wellness.
Oversee all operational and logistical planning as well as serving as a key stakeholder in the strategic planning, implementation, and evaluation of the Esports program. Develop, implement and evaluate operating policies and procedures for the Esports Arena. Manage the esports operational budget and maintain accurate financial records in accordance with university policy. Provide strategic direction that allows for growth of UNCG Esports in the collegiate competition environment. Enforce code of conduct for Esports participants to ensure personal behavior and program reputation are in alignment with UNCG’s mission. Collaborate with the Institutional Research Department to implement a data reporting and analysis structure that can be used to monitor and evaluate esports initiatives and strategies. Prepare and communicate reports as needed or requested. Represent UNCG and the Esports program at campus and offsite events, in person or virtually. Assist in the cultivation and maintaining relationships with corporate sponsorships.
Facility Operations and Supervision (25%)
Supervise daily arena operations, including the hiring, training, evaluation, and direct supervision of one graduate assistant, a team of 20+ student employees, and student interns. Establish and maintain operating schedules, competition (league & tournament schedule coordination), and practice schedules for all sponsored events for the Esports Arena. Implements policies and procedures in accordance with Environmental Health and Safety codes and regulations. Coordinate, supervise, and evaluate Esports programming, open recreation gaming, special events (including academic-related events), leagues, camps, and tournaments. Collaborate with other departments and student groups/organizations to help facilitate academic and shared usage of the Esports Arena. Work collaboratively with Enrollment Management to host prospective student events and tours. Work closely with University Communications to develop innovative and effective esports communication and marketing strategies. Provide facility tours and respond to inquiries about the arena and its usage.
Responsible for advising, coaching, and recruiting players for the UNCG Esports Club. Provide leadership and supervision of part-time coaches in a variety of game titles. Support club competition by hosting local area network (LAN) and online competitions. Coordinate practice and game schedules in accordance with any league requirements and club requests. Ensure student group/team compliance to all league and/or governing body rules and regulations for competition to mitigate risk to the University. Develop recruitment strategies for incoming students. Coordinate all hiring of part-time coaches in accordance with university policies and procedures.
Information Technology (25%)
Troubleshoot basic system issues with technology in the arena, including gaming and audio/visual systems, broadcasting and production technology, and work with ITS to address advanced issues. Manage arena access and access reporting through Innosoft Fusion software. Serve as the primary point of contact and administrator for ggLeap software which is used to manage PC games and user experience in the arena. Work with ITS to plan, design, and implement technology updates, upgrades, and enhancements in the arena. Working knowledge and ability to operate gaming console equipment and PC gaming across multiple platforms. Oversee computer hardware and software needs related to competitive esports in collaboration with ITS. Manage the purchase of selected gaming titles and implement sound strategies, playing patterns, and dynamics of competitive play. Network within the collegiate esports industry, and stay abreast in esports and gaming trends and technology. Coordinate and maintain social media channels sharing information about the team, players, and arena. As a member of the Recreation and Wellness team, provide general support and troubleshooting for technology issues, including software, hardware, and systems for the department, and serve as the primary point of contact for ITS.
