Position Summary: The Graduate Assistant (GA) of Aquatics provides support for the management and operation of aquatic and water based outdoor recreation programs, facilities, and events. This position offers an opportunity for professional development in the fields of recreation management, student engagement, and program planning. The GA will work closely with staff to support the delivery of high-quality recreational opportunities for students, staff, and faculty, focusing on safety, inclusion, and engagement in both aquatic and outdoor environments. This position is 9 months/25 hours per week with an annual stipend of $15,000. The contract is renewable on a yearly basis and is dependent on the maintenance of satisfactory academic standing.
Key Responsibilities:
Aquatics Program Support:
Assist in the management and operation of the pool and related facilities.
Assist with the planning and execution of monthly in-service trainings for lifeguards.
Support the planning and execution of swimming lessons, lifeguard training, and aquatic fitness classes.
Assist with scheduling and overseeing lifeguard staff, ensuring proper staffing levels for pool operations.
Help with maintenance and safety of aquatic equipment and facilities
Assist in ensuring compliance with all health and safety standards and regulations in aquatic settings
Outdoor Recreation Program Support
Assist in organizing and coordinating water based outdoor recreation trips, events, and classes (e.g. kayaking, canoeing, boaters’ safety, etc…).
Help promote outdoor programs and encourage student participation
Assist in the development and implementation of outdoor safety protocols and training related to water based outdoor recreation
Assist management in the operation of the beach front and shoreline at the Snow Complex.
Staff Training & Development:
Participate in staff trainings, including lifeguard certifications, outdoor safety, and leadership development workshops.
Obtain a Lifeguard Instructor Certification and lead lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid trainings.
Assist in the recruitment, development, training, and supervision of student staff (e.g. lifeguards, trip leaders, and swim instructors)
Provide guidance and mentorship to student employees in their roles and responsibilities.
Program & Event Evaluation:
Assist with the evaluation of aquatics and outdoor recreation programs to assess participation, satisfaction, and effectiveness
Help collect feedback from participants and aquatics/outdoor staff members; incorporate suggestions into program and planning.
Collaboration and Leadership:
Collaborate with other campus departments and organizations to promote a holistic student experience.
Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities as required.
Represent the aquatics and outdoor recreation programs at campus events or outreach activities.
Qualifications:
Must be a graduate student enrolled in a relevant academic program.
Ability to swim the distance of the American Red Cross prerequisite swim test.
Current or ability to obtain an American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification and First Aid/CPR/AED certifications.
Current or ability to obtain an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification.
Strong interest in aquatics, outdoor recreation, and student wellness.
Previous experience in aquatics, outdoor recreation, or a related field preferred.
Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
Knowledge of various computer software systems; Microsoft Office, Outlook, Word, etc.
Knowledge of outdoor recreation equipment and safety protocols is a plus.
