The Outdoor Pursuits Program Manager oversees student-led outdoor trips, the indoor climbing gym, bike shop, and equipment rentals, as part of the Recreational Services team that operates the Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center. The staff member in this position works with students to help them develop outdoor programming & leadership skills, trains and guides the indoor and outdoor climbing staff, and manages policies and procedures within their areas of responsibility. The OPP Manager is responsible to maintain and improve safety and compliance within OPP programs.
The Pacific Northwest is a unique and beautiful destination in the western United States and the Outdoor Pursuits Program at the University of Portland provides opportunities for students to explore and to develop a life-long appreciation for the recreation and natural experiences that the outdoors can provide. The OPP Manager helps develop the essential skills of student trip leaders to prepare them to lead outdoor trips, as well as the skills of those students who work in the Indoor Climbing Center, the Equipment Rental Shop, and the Bike Shop. Working in collaboration with University officials including the Director of Recreational Services, the Outdoor Program Manager oversees risk management and training, developing and building upon the knowledge and skills of student staff and participants.
The OPP Manager develops promotional plans for areas of responsibility consistent with the department’s overall marketing plan, utilizing digital, printed, and other relevant media. They also administer budget allocations, monitor expenditures, including equipment, supplies, trip expenses, and payroll.
The Outdoor Pursuits Program is a valued asset within the University's offerings, and the Program Manager can have a profound impact on the student experience.
3 to 5 years of experience in directly relevant area(s): leading outdoor recreation programs, experiential education, physical education, sports management, or a combination of equivalent education and experience.
Positive, motivated professional with love of the outdoors and experience developing outdoor leadership skills in students.
Valid driver's license and safe driving record.
Preferred: Professional management experience in a university recreation outdoor program, climbing facility management, certified CPR instructor, proficiency in marketing, website management, inventory and rental management.
