NC State University is seeking an energetic, innovative, student-centered leader for the position of Coordinator, Outdoor Adventures. We seek an individual with proven leadership experience capable of working as part of a fast-paced, results-oriented team. The candidate will empower student staff to create world-class wellness and recreation programs, services, and facilities that promote and enhance student success inside and outside of the classroom. This position reports to the Assistant Director, Outdoor Adventures.
The Coordinator, Outdoor Adventures directs and is responsible for the challenge course and the Outdoor Adventure Trips program. Ensures all programs operate within required risk management procedures and will oversee the implementation of safety standards. This position reports to the Assistant Director, Outdoor Adventures.
Specific responsibilities include:
Provides leadership and directs the challenge course. Independently manage day-to-day operations that include staffing, reservations, billing/invoicing, equipment maintenance, repair, upgrade and replacement, and inventory control. Develop, implement, and update standard operating procedures and guidelines. Responsible for supervision (hiring, disciplining, terminating, performance evaluations) of more than 15 student challenge course facilitators (equivalent to more than 4 FTE). Facilitate training, mentoring and continuing education opportunities for staff. Negotiate and execute program agreements for campus, community and corporate organizations. Responsible for managing time cards and bi-weekly payroll for respective student staff. Provide expert on-site supervision of staff.
Provides leadership and directs the Outdoor Adventure Trips program. Lead, and instruct skills and techniques necessary for adventure trips – specific trips include but are not limited to include backpacking, canoeing, sea kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking, caving, whitewater rafting, etc. Manage the logistics of the trip program (vehicles, equipment, reservations, permits, etc.). Develop, implement, and update standard operating procedures and guidelines. Create a Trip Control Plan for all trips that include trip logistics, participant health history and emergency contact information, and activity-specific risk management concerns. Work directly with the University Risk Manager to ensure proper University and department risk management procedures are followed for each professional or student-led trip. Research, negotiate and obtain agreements/permits and associated fees with national and state parks. Responsible for supervision (hiring, disciplining, terminating, performance evaluations) of more than 15 student Trip Leaders (equivalent to more than 3 FTE). Responsible for managing time cards and bi-weekly payroll for respective student staff. Provide expert on-site supervision of staff.
Independently makes decisions and exceptions about standard operating procedures and guidelines — including approving refunds, assessing equipment damage, and charging fees associated, as appropriate.
Responsible for the operating budget of $50k annually. Responsible for managing sustainable fee structure that includes personnel costs, challenge course and climbing wall fees, equipment replacement plan, etc.
Provides consultation and expert advice on best practices, industry trends and emerging issues to Assistant Director, Outdoor Adventures and Wellness and Recreation leadership.
Resolve conflicts and grievances within the area of responsibility. Develop and execute an on-going customer service training program to ensure goals, objectives and outcomes are met.
Plan and assess short and long term business objectives and goals for challenge course and Outdoor Adventure Trips program to determine satisfaction levels, areas of improvement and potential sectors to target among staff and participants. Participate in overall department assessment and goal planning.
Assist with the development and execution of marketing strategies for Outdoor Adventures programs, services and special events.
Direct and assist in the implementation of special events, certification workshops and conferences.
Assist as needed in all required departmental functions.
Master’s degree in recreation, outdoor recreation, experiential education, higher education administration or related field; if in progress, must be completed within six months of hire.
Two or more years of experience in challenge course programming and/or instruction; may include graduate assistantship experience.
Experience leading and facilitating adventure-based trips.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, TRAINING/EDUCATION
Previous experience managing a collegiate recreation challenge course.
Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) Level II or Challenge Course Manager certification.
Demonstrated competency in teaching and instructing staff and participants technical skills in two or more of the following areas: backpacking, rock climbing, mountain biking, canoeing, and sea kayaking.
Experience with technology as it relates to daily processing and statistical tracking.
Demonstrated experience administering risk management practices for challenge courses.
Demonstrated success developing and/or implementing programs for a culturally diverse student population.
Current American Red Cross CPR, AED, and first aid instructor.
Certifications in any of the following: Swift Water Rescue, Single Pitch Instructor, American Canoe Association (ACA) Levels 1 – 5 and Leave No Trace Master Educator.
REQUIRED LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION
Wilderness First Responder certification is required (must obtain as a condition of employment within 90 days of hire).
ACCT Level 1 certification or higher is required (must obtain as a condition of employment within 90 days of hire).
Valid Driver’s License or the ability to obtain a NC Driver’s License within 60 days of hire.
