Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Associate Director – Programs & Assessment, the Assistant Director – Competitive sports provides direct management and oversight for the daily operations of all associated competitive sports programming (Intramurals & Sport Clubs) and facilities within Campus Recreation aimed at fostering a culture of wellness, safety, and holistic wellbeing among TU's diverse student body. This incumbent provides development and administration of a comprehensive competitive sports program that offers inclusive recreational opportunities promoting the development of student leaders and healthy lifestyles through physical activity including but not limited to intramural and sport clubs facility management, programming, and instruction; competitive sports officials training, facilitation and instruction; turf field management and administration, equipment preventative maintenance management; athletic training services; budgetary oversight for all operations including student payroll, operational expenses, and programmatic revenue generation; administration of programmatic assessment related to departmental learning outcomes and key performance indicators; responsible for all competitive sports equipment purchasing and replacement recommendations; responsible for student staff hiring, training, and development for competitive sports programs and services. Incumbent will directly supervise the Coordinator – Intramural Sports, Campus Recreation Athletic Trainer(s), sports club graduate assistant, and student support staff.
Responsibilities and Duties
Competitive Sports Program Management:
Administer, supervise and manage the day-to-day operations of the departmental competitive sports program including management of departmental turf fields, intramural programs and student staff, the sport club organization and sport club council and any related competitive sports programs for the University community.
Assist the Coordinator with the creation, implementation and supervision of a variety of organized and informal competitive sports programs for all students, faculty, staff and alumni based on current and established competitive sports trends, principles, guidelines and risk management principles related to health and recreation.
Sports Club Program Management:
Oversee the planning, administration, assessment and promotion of a comprehensive sport club program for the University community.
Establish guidelines and procedures, revise, and enforce regarding travel, eligibility and play by participants. Regularly review and edit the Sport Club Handbook as needed.
Keep accurate records of daily operations and provide periodic participation reports for all sport club activities and programming.
Coordinate the development and coordination of periodic in-service training sessions and evaluations for all staff members.
Serve as an advisor to the Sport Club Council for all policy and procedure changes, budget allocations, sanctions and overall program development.
Acts as a liaison to the Student Government Association regarding sport club operations and oversight.
Oversee all fiscal tracking and management of over $400,000 allocation for sport clubs including all pro card and travel purchases, account tracking and balancing, equipment purchases and approving and processing all transactions.
Intramural Sports Program Management:
Plan, administer, assess, and promote a comprehensive and diverse intramural sports program that is aligned with nationally recognized industry standards by supervising the Coordinator- Intramural Sports.
Personnel Management:
Recruit, hire, train and directly supervise approximately 30-60 student staff members.
Develop and coordinate monthly in-service training sessions for competitive sports student staff.
Approve selected student employee timesheets and comply with campus/department student employee and payroll policies.
Provide direction and support for full-time Intramural Sports Coordinator and graduate assistant of sport clubs. Supervise the Campus Recreation Athletic Trainer and part time contractual athletic trainer(s).
Provide regular performance feedback and opportunities for ongoing professional development.
Approve full-time timesheets and complete performance review meetings as required.
Work with Coordinator to develop and conduct pre-service and in-service training programs for student employees.
Manage 10+ volunteer and paid sport club coaches.
Qualifications and Skills
Required:
Bachelor's degree
Two years of professional experience in sports related programming or administration (two years of GA experience will count as one year of professional experience).
Demonstrated supervisory experience in managing a diverse sports program to include programming, facility management and staffing preferably in a recreational setting (public, private, or university).
Current CPR and AED certifications.
Strong computer skills for the processing of facility, fiscal and personnel management.
Preferred:
Masters degree in recreation, sport, leisure management or related field.
CPR, AED and First Aid-Professional Rescue Instructor certified.
Experience working in a collegiate recreation environment.
