Recreation has an outstanding opportunity for a Fitness & Wellness Manager to join their team.
About the Team
The mission of UW Recreation is to provide safe, accessible, and dynamic recreation experiences to engage students in growth and wellbeing.
About this Opportunity
Reporting to the Associate Director, the Fitness & Wellness Manager is responsible for overseeing a comprehensive program for UW Recreation, which includes oversight and supervision of the Group Fitness Program, Personal Training, REC Nutrition, and Massage Clinic. They will develop and implement policies and procedures for all program operations in accordance with department and University rules, and industry standards. They will recruit, hire, train, schedule and supervise approximately 65 temporary staff. They will plan and allocate budgeted resources.
Promising candidates will possess a passion for recreation, have a creative approach to their work, show an ability to be a leading as well as a contributing member of a team, manage projects and people with the highest level of integrity, display an extreme attention to detail, and have a proven track record of developing and executing a vision.
This role will serve on the UW Seattle campus is eligible for up to 2x/week telework.
Key Responsibilities
Programming – 60%
Oversee and manage a comprehensive Fitness and Wellness program, including Group Fitness, Personal Training, Recreational Nutrition, Massage Services, and Yoga Teacher Training, ensuring alignment with industry standards and departmental policies.
Plan, implement, and continuously improve programs using current and emerging technologies, including scheduling, marketing, registration, facility use, and program evaluation.
Develop, implement, and annually review policies, procedures, and risk management practices to ensure safety, compliance, and program effectiveness.
Lead staff training and meetings on key operational areas such as policies, risk management, emergency procedures, scheduling, and class delivery.
Design and deliver educational offerings, including the Yoga Teacher Training program, workshops, and group classes as needed.
Evaluate and approve new program offerings based on alignment with departmental goals, resource capacity, and participant demand.
Monitor and assess program performance using participation data and business needs; compile and report quarterly and annual metrics.
Serve as the department’s subject matter expert on Fitness and Wellness programming and support cross-department collaboration.
Personnel 20%
Recruit, hire, train and supervise all Fitness and Wellness instructional temporary employee staff of approximately 65.
Ensure employees have proper up-to-date training certifications for specific fitness and wellness programs and first aid administration, as well as all department-mandated training.
Process semimonthly payroll in accordance with department and University policy and procedures. Manage employees and schedules to meet University student and temporary employee requirements.
Facility Management 10%
Maintain Fitness and Wellness class quarterly schedule for on-going classes, drop-in classes, and Rec on Demand.
Provide on-site event coordination for major Fitness and Wellness special events.
Monitor and arrange the use of Fitness and Wellness equipment throughout the year.
Establish and maintain professional relationships with other UW departments, local fitness facilities, and industry associations.
Budgeting 10%
Prepare an annual budget for the Fitness and Wellness program. Project expenditures in staffing, equipment, and contract services.
Manage the Fitness and Wellness budget and maintain internal control of all expenditures and ensure fiscal responsibility and compliance.
Evaluate equipment needs and make purchases.
Approve Fitness and Wellness certification needs and handle reimbursements.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree
A minimum of 2 years of full-time work experience in program or recreation administration, including experience supervising, managing, or mentoring students or staff
Additional Qualifications:
Must hold and maintain at least one nationally recognized fitness certification in personal training or group fitness instruction. Acceptable certifications include, but are not limited to:
American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM Certified Personal Trainer, Group Exercise Instructor, or Exercise Physiologist)
National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM Certified Personal Trainer or Group Fitness Instructor)
National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist or Certified Personal Trainer)
American Council on Exercise (ACE Personal Trainer or Group Fitness Instructor)
Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA Group Fitness Instructor or Personal Fitness Trainer)
International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA Certified Fitness Trainer).
Working knowledge of scheduling and recreation management software
Current certification in First Aid/CPR/AED (may be obtained within six months of employment)
