The Assistant Director of Marketing and Outreach, creates and implements a comprehensive marketing, outreach, and special events initiative program to support all programs, services, and activities within the Recreation and Wellness department at ODU. The Assistant Director oversees the strategic development of campus and community outreach campaigns and leads the planning and execution of large-scale signature events. This position is responsible for hiring, training, and supervising student employees. The Assistant Director maintains current certifications and continuing education related to marketing and outreach and assists in long-range planning and implementation of departmental programming as it relates to the overall mission within the division.
Core Responsibilities, Duties, and Tasks
40% | Marketing, Promotions, & Brand Management
Core Responsibility: Develop, plan, and implement comprehensive departmental marketing and promotional strategies to support all programming, services, facilities, and special events.
Duties & Tasks:
Lead marketing and promotion utilizing various means including graphic design, publications, video, recreation app updates, and multi-media sources.
Manage the department’s visual brand, ensuring consistency across all program areas.
Provide content updates, graphic support, and design templates for the department website and social media platforms.
Work with division customer relation software and analytics tools to engage students, track marketing reach, and report on engagement participation trends.
35% | Strategic Outreach & Special Events
Core Responsibility: Plan, execute, and evaluate departmental outreach initiatives and signature special events to increase campus engagement and foster community partnerships.
Duties & Tasks:
Lead the planning, logistics, and execution of major departmental signature events and open houses.
Coordinate comprehensive outreach events, fairs, welcome weeks, and informational tabling across campus to actively increase awareness and participation.
Provide targeted tours and dynamic presentations about department offerings for student organizations, learning communities, and external community groups.
Develop and maintain giving campaigns to support recreation and wellness operations and student development.
15% | Personnel Supervision & Student Development
Core Responsibility: Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate student staff.
Duties & Tasks:
Hire, train, and oversee part-time student employees, including Graduate Assistants, hourly employees, and student staff positions (e.g., Marketing Staff, Content Creators, Street Teams, and Event Volunteers) to ensure high-quality production and professional representation.
Promote student leadership opportunities that directly support departmental student learning outcomes.
5% | Divisional Collaboration: SCL Communications Team
Core Responsibility: Serve on the SCL Divisional Communications Team.
Duties & Tasks:
Participate as an active member of the division’s Communications Team, led by the Director of Communication for SCL, including regular meetings to coordinate communications support for all offices in the division.
Assist with supporting all forms of division office communications-related tasks, projects, and initiatives in coordination with other team members.
5% | Projects and Other Duties as Assigned
Core Responsibility: Complete special projects and administrative reporting.
Duties & Tasks: Develop comprehensive reports that support departmental outreach initiatives, marketing ROI, and event outcomes.
Provide data-driven feedback regarding student and participant experiences.
Complete special projects and perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Recreation and Wellness.
Minimum Qualifications
Excellent organizational, management, leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with other individuals and departments on campus and in the surrounding community.
High level of organizational skills and a proven record of delivering quality results in a timely manner.
Proven ability to manage multi-faceted projects, handle event logistics, and deliver results.
Excellent written and oral communication skills; excellent intrapersonal skills. Ability to think critically and present information dynamically is essential.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Enterprise Marketing, HTML, InDesign, Adobe Design Suite, CRM platforms, and a willingness to learn new programs.
Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed to support special events and late-night outreach.
First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications required (or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment).
Master’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Event Management, Higher Education Administration, or a related field required; OR a Bachelor’s degree in the areas previously indicated along with professional experience equivalent to a Master’s degree.
Some experience planning, organizing, and executing medium-to-large scale events or community outreach campaigns.
Some experience in designing and maintaining websites and social media platforms.
Considerable experience in marketing to and reaching targeted demographics (specifically young adults/college students).
Some experience in researching and applying best practices and trends regarding branding, student engagement, and incentivizing participation.
Basic experience critiquing designs, multimedia concepts, and event layouts.
Preferred Qualifications
Some experience working in a collegiate recreation, student affairs, or higher education setting.
Experience supervising student staff or volunteers in an event or marketing capacity.
